SENIORS FINISH ON TOP; PLAYERS RECEIVE CONFERENCE HONORS

Posted 5/2/04:

Despite losing 12 of 13 games in Florida and nine games in a row heading into the tournament, the Terriers were able to peak at the right time, winning three straight games to win their third conference championship in four years.

The 8-5, extra-inning victory was especially sweet for the seniors; they will not play another game in a Terrier uniform.  The senior class was by far the most successful the College has had, playing in four championship games, including the 15-1 upset over St. Joseph's College back in 2001.

First-year player, Matt Pavlis was named Co-Rookie of the Year in the North Atlantic Conference, compiling 64 hits, batting .388 with 15 doubles and 24 runs batted in on the season.  He was also named to the All-Tournament team.

Junior Lance Haynes had seven hits, two of which were homeruns, and five runs scored to earn a spot of the 2004 All-Tournament Team.

Jevon Owens' complete-game, two-run performance in game one of the tournament was good enough to be named to the All-Conference Team as well.

Jim Pierce had nine hits--three of which were doubles--and played outstanding defense for the Terriers to be named as the 2004 North Atlantic Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player.

All-Conference teams have yet to be announced.

STRONG RELIEF AND TIMELY HITTING LEAD TERRIERS OVER BATES

Posted 4/20/04:

Ben Fairclough earned his first win of the season by pitching five solid relief innings while Matt Pavlis
(2), Scott Brawn (5), and Brandon Connors (2) accounted for all nine runs batted in as the Terriers upended Bates College, 9-7 in a nine-inning game Monday afternoon.

Fairclough entered the game with no outs in the top of the first inning facing a 5-0 deficit.  He left the game in the 6th as the pitcher of record, with the team leading 8-7.  Scott Brawn's two doubles and five runs batted in helped the Terriers climb back in the game, while Brandon Connors tacked on an insurance run with a solo homerun in the 6th.  Brandon Leon and Shawn Cloutier combined for four shutout innings in relief as well.

The Terriers open their North Atlantic Conference schedule on Wednesday, April 22 when Farmington heads to Waterville for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at H. Allen Ryan Field.

FRIDAY DOUBLEHEADER NOW AT HUSSON

Posted 4/15/04:

Due to poor field conditions, the Terriers will take on Husson in Bangor.  Game time is slated for 1:00 pm.

HUSSON TWIN-BILL POSTPONED

Posted 4/13/04:

Due to forecasted inclement weather, Wednesday's doubleheader versus Husson College has been postponed until Friday, April 16th.  The games will start at 1:00 pm.  Should H. Allen Ryan Field not be ready to play on at that time, the site will switch to Husson.  Keep checking back for up-to-date information regarding the game location.

BRAWN CALLS FARMINGTON HOME

Posted 4/10/04:

Scott Brawn is from Augusta, Maine and attends Thomas College in Waterville, but he should call Hippach Field in Farmington his third home.  Brawn took advantage of a 266-foot right-field porch in Saturday's doubleheader and continued his previous success by hitting 3 homeruns (7 total in Farmington) and driving in 10, leading the Terriers to a sweep to open their North Atlantic Conference schedule.

In game on, the Terriers' first six hitters had 13 of the team's 15 total hits, including two homeruns and five runs batted in by Brawn.  Late-inning heroics were needed, however, to win as Lance Haynes hit a pinch-hit, game-tying single in the top of the 7th. Farmington had climbed back to take a one-run lead in the 6th after being down 6-1 after 2.  Brawn's second homerun hugged the foul pole and was just deep enough to be the game-winner in the 8th.  Ryan Rulman took the win (1-1) on the mound in the 9-7 victory.

The Terriers got ahead with 4 runs in the first inning of game two, and unlike game one, continued the onslaught for five more innings, winning 17-2.  Jon Souza was impressive on the mound, throwing strikes and working quickly on his way to his first win of the season (1-1).  Jordan Stebbins was one of many Terriers who hit well, going 4-4 with a run scored and 2 runs batted in.

The two wins Saturday improve the Terriers' overall record to 6-13 on the season.  They have won 4 of their last 5 games since returning from the Clearwater Invitational in Florida.

Thomas will play Husson in their home-opener on Wednesday, April 14 beginning at 1:00 pm at H. Allen Ryan Field.

PIERCE CAPS 11-RUN FIFTH TO EARN SPLIT

Posted 4/9/04:

First-year third baseman Jim Pierce hit a three-run, game-winning homerun to lead the Terriers all the way back from an eight-run deficit in the second game of Friday's doubleheader versus St. Joseph's College.  The 11-9 victory was the team's third in the last four games.

With a runner on first and two outs in the 2nd inning of game 2, St. Joe's took advantage of a catcher's interference call on a routine fly ball to center by putting up seven runs and digging a deep hole for the Terriers to climb out of.  Chad Stowell came in to relieve Jordan Stebbins on the mound and was able to stop the bleeding long enough for the Terriers to make their comeback--earning his first win of the season.  Ryan Rulman pitched 2 1/3 innings to earn his first save.

In a well-played game by both teams, the Terriers came up short in game 1 Friday, losing 3-2 despite out-hitting St. Joe's 9-5.  One more hit in the 6th or 7th innings would have significantly changed the result--5 runners were left on in those two innings.

The Terriers overall record moves to 4-13 on the season.  First-year pitchers Jon Souza and Sean Cregg will take the hill tomorrow as the Terriers open North Atlantic Conference play when they take on the University of Maine at Farmington at noon.

APRIL 9 DOUBLEHEADER CHANGED

Posted 4/8/04:

The doubleheader scheduled to be played at Thomas College versus St. Joseph's College has changed locations.  Due to field conditions, the games will be played on campus at St. Joe's in Windham, Maine.  The doubleheader that is scheduled for April 22nd is now going to be played at H. Allen Ryan field at Thomas.

The Terriers game scheduled for Tuesday, April 6 versus Colby has been cancelled.

'SECOND SEASON' STARTS OFF WITH TWO WINS

Posted 4/5/04:

Coach King told his players prior to the start of Sunday's doubleheader versus Salve Regina University that "our second season starts today."  After a tough schedule left the Terriers with only one win in Florida, King wanted to motivate his players with a fresh start.  With the change in weather from Florida to Rhode Island, so did the Terriers' performance.

Jevon Owens led Thomas on the mound in game one, holding Salve to just three runs in 5.2 innings while striking out seven and walking two in his first victory since coming back from arm surgery during the off-season.

Scott Brawn, last year's Sunrise Conference Player of the Year, returned to form, belting his first homerun of the season in a six-run 7th inning to lead the Terriers to an 11-3 victory.  Brawn and Corey Pelletier (2-3 with a double) accounted for 7 of the team's 11 runs batted in.

Jordan Stebbins pitched a complete-game shutout in game 2 to lead the Terriers to a 4-0 win.  Offensively, Jerry Randall did much of the damage, going 3-3 with a stolen base and one run batted in for the Terriers, who improved their record to 3-12 with the two victories.

MONEY TIME!

Posted 2/24/04:

The Thomas College Baseball program is working to raise money for its annual Spring trip to Florida.  Each year, players work with the surrounding communities--from Central Maine to Southern New England--to raise money to fund their transportation and lodging in the Sunshine State.

The annual Spaghetti Supper and garage sale will be held on March 6th and 7th respectively.  Proceeds will be used to help minimize the overall cost of the trip.

The Dining Center located in the student center building on campus at Thomas College will be used to host the spaghetti supper.  Pasta, salad, and cookies are served at the buffet line.  This is also a unique opportunity for those who attend to be entered into a raffle drawing for donated auction items from the surrounding Central Maine business community.  Last year, free one-night stays at local hotels, restaurant gift certificates and gift baskets were among the items raffled off to those who attended.  Premier and autographed items have also been donated and will be auctioned off in a silent-auction format. See the silent auction page for more details!

Tickets for the Spaghetti Supper can be purchased by contacting Coach King.  Tickets cost $15 for one person or $25 for two people.  The event will begin at 1:00 pm.

The garage sale will be held in the Larry Mahaney Gymnasium at 8 a.m.  People from the local community are encouraged to come look at a wide array of used items.  The money used to purchase these items make a tremendous impact in keeping the cost of the trip minimal.

Parents who plan to attend the Spaghetti Supper are encouraged to bring garage sale items when they attend.
