About Thomas Admissions Academics Student Life Athletics Support Thomas

"The friendships I've made at Thomas have been nothing short of amazing; in such an intimate, tight-knit community, you get to know other students quite well. These are the relationships that will last long after I graduate, some for a lifetime. I’m also really excited to think about ten years down the road and see what we’ve become, reflecting back on how our Thomas experience helped to shape and guide us."

Southern Maine rallies past Thomas
Thomas 8, USM 11

Gorham, Maine -- Junior OF Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) drove in four runs on a pair of home runs and two singles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 11-8 win over the Thomas College Terriers in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham.

Earning their second straight win, Southern Maine improves to 21-9 on the season. Suffering its fourth consecutive loss, Thomas College dips to 9-12.

D'Alfonso, who has a team-leading nine home runs on the season, was one of three USM players to hit at least one home run in the contest as the Huskies tagged the Thomas College pitchers for five in the game. Junior SS Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) connected on his sixth and seventh home runs of the season and sophomore 2B Josh Mackey (Danver, Mass.) blasted out his third of the year. D'Alfonso finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate.

After opening up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo shot from Burleson, the Huskies trailed Thomas 5-1 after two and a half innings. Sophomore 2B Ryan Cotnoir (Augusta, Maine) pulled the Terriers even with the Huskies in the top of the second with an RBI double scoring sophomore C Nick Cloutier (Topsham, Maine). Thomas plated four more runs in the top of the third, including a three-run double from Cloutier. Cloutier led the Terriers offensively with three RBI on two singles and double. USM took two runs back in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back home runs from D'Alfonso and Mackey to trail 5-3.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Thomas added a run to lead 6-3 when junior OF Michael Chamard (Livermore Falls, Maine) came around to score on a USM error after reaching base safely with a single. However, the Huskies were able to rally for four runs in their at bat in the bottom of the inning on three hits, two walks and an error. D'Alfonso plated two of USM's runs connecting on his second home run of the game, while junior DH Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine) added an RBI single. Southern Maine added two more runs in the top of the sixth and another in the seventh to lead 10-6. Burleson drove in both of USM's runs in the sixth inning on a two-run home run. Stowell collected his second RBI single of the game in the seventh to score Mackey who led off the inning with a double.

Thomas cut the lead to two, plating two runs in the top of the eighth on RBI from Cotnoir and freshman OF Scott Geel (Calais, Maine), but it was not enough as USM added a run in the bottom of the inning for the 11-8 final.

Southern Maine freshman Nick Hahn (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) earned the win, coming on in relief for the Huskies in the sixth inning. Hahn pitched 2.3 innings allowing three hits, and two earned runs. Junior Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine) earned the save in the ninth inning. Thomas College junior Sam Shain (Hallowell, Maine) took the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings.

Thomas will host Husson on Saturday April 26 in a NAC double-header. Game one will start at 1:00 on the Thomas Campus.
