"The friendships I've made at Thomas have been nothing short of amazing; in such an intimate, tight-knit community, you get to know other students quite well. These are the relationships that will last long after I graduate, some for a lifetime. I’m also really excited to think about ten years down the road and see what we’ve become, reflecting back on how our Thomas experience helped to shape and guide us."

Thomas Baseball Returns from Arizona
Terriers Victim of Five Game Skid

Waterville, Maine -- The Thomas College baseball team (3-5) will return to Maine looking to end their recent five-game losing streak as they cooled off in their final games in Arizona over the past week. Thomas lost a pair of games to both Chicago and Castleton State College by the scores of 6-1, 20-5, and 22-11, 14-3, respectively.

On March 29, Thomas struggled to get any offensive production as they only plated one run and fell to Chicago by the score of 6-1. Thomas got a strong start from starting pitcher Payton Austin (Lisbon, Maine), as he gave up only one earned run over five innings of work, but relief pitching faltered as the Terriers gave up five more runs over the final three innings. Josh Nickerson (Stockton Springs, Maine) recorded Thomas' only multi-hit game with a 2 for 3 day at the plate.

On the second day of action with Chicago, the Thomas pitching staff was hit hard, giving up 19 earned runs. Thomas trailed 7-4 at the end of the fourth inning, but Chicago scored seven runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach as the Terriers fell by the score of 20-5. Jared Fieldsend (Somersworth, New Hampshire) went 2 for 3 and Mike Chamard (Livermore Falls, Maine) had a hit in two of his four at-bats in the game and Dan Philbrick (Manchester, Connecticut) plated two of the Terriers five runs.

On March 31, Thomas competed against North Atlantic Conference rival, Castleton State College, in non-conference action. Thomas grabbed the lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases-clearing double by Fieldsend (3 for 4) by the score of 10-8, but Castleton came right back with eight runs of their own to take the 16-10 lead and never looking back. Thomas fell by the score of 22-11. Despite the loss, Thomas starting pitcher Kyle Kendall (Fairhaven, Massachusetts) pitched well over five innings of work. Philbrick scored three runs while hitting 2 for 4 at the plate. Sam Shain (Hallowell, Maine) batted in two runs and Mike Busa (Carver, Massachusetts) went 2 for 4 at the plate.

In the final game of the spring trip for Thomas, the Terriers grabbed a quick 3-0 lead by the end of the first inning on hits by Chamard (2 for 3) and Shain. That was short lived, however, as Castleton scored in each of the next six innings to take a 14-3 lead. Nickerson and Busa went 2 for 4 and 2 for 3, respectively.

Thomas was lead offensively on the spring trip by Jared Fieldsend, who posted a .355 average and recording seven RBI's. First-year player Josh Nickerson also played well by hitting .333. Sam Shain, Mike Chamard and Nick Schauwecker (Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts) each knocked in five runs on the trip. The Thomas pitching staff was lead by Payton Austin who posted a 3.86 ERA in seven innings of work.

Thomas has returned from their spring trip and will be back on the field this weekend in back-to-back double-headers to compete in their first North Atlantic Conference games in Massachusetts against Elms College on Saturday at 1:00 pm, and against Becker College on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
