Career Services Update - week of January 17, 2005!

* Mark your calendar – Career Services will be hosting a resume workshop on Sunday February 13th at 7:00pm in the Atrium.  The presentation will last around an hour.  I have a feeling you’ll be hungry, so as an enticement I will be ordering pizza.  To ensure a proper pizza to student ratio please RSVP by emailing me here.  Everyone is welcome.  I would appreciate it if you only rsvp if you’re serious about attending.  (pizzas don’t grow on trees yet – a pizza plant is apparently in the works).

The Thomas College Annual Career Fair has officially been penciled in for Wednesday March 16th from 9:30am until 1:30pm.  Yes, it’s a little early to be talking about the fair but businesses are making plans to attend.  For an updated list of companies that will be attending click here.

If you’re jonesing for a career fair I would strongly suggest you make plans to attend UMO’s Career Fair on Wednesday January 26th from 10am until 3:00pm.  Approximately 120 companies will be in Orono looking to hire Maine graduates – All students are welcome to attend the fair.  (As a side note the Career Services office will be closed that day so that I can attend the fair too).

* Summer Jobs  I’m starting to see some action in terms of summer jobs being submitted to my office for posting.  If employers are worrying about filling summer positions it’s probably a good time for you to give it some thought as well.  I would urge you to consider a position that will build on your resume – not just extend it.  Instead of doing what you always do each summer, think of ways that you can get some needed experience in your field.  Developing contacts and lining up interviews takes time so it’s never too early to start.

If you’re looking for an internship you may find this site interesting, it’s Internships.com (original huh?). It lists a host of opportunities throughout the US – there are even a couple in Maine.  The majority of them are unpaid, but most internships out there are that way.

* Job Hunting Tips   Are you an introvert?  You’re not alone.  There are a few good tips for you in this Wall Street Journal article.  Sure the tip entitled Enlist event organizers to introduce you  may not be that practical for us – the others are valid for most anyone who has a hard time promoting themselves.

* New Jobs   There are a couple of political internships of note.  Rep. Mike Michaud is looking for interns for his new Waterville office.  Rep. John Eder is looking for an intern to work at the State House in Augusta 1 day a week.   These are great opportunities regardless of your political affiliation.

Other jobs are listed here and are updated daily as new jobs come in.

Have a great week!
