Career Services Update - week of January 19, 2004

* Congratulations – New hire

Derek Dumont came into the Career Services office fresh off the boat from his semester in Australia with the Australearn program looking for work.  Later that day he had a new job at Emery & Garrett Groundwater in Waterville as an Office Assistant.  If you come to Career Services looking for work will you get a job that fast?  Umm, well…… ahhhh – maybe not.  But, that job was on our jobs posting website on the Infonet waiting for someone to make it theirs.  Derek made the important first step and you should too – visit our office OR check out the website – it is updated daily.

* Mark your calendar –

UMO’s huge Career Fair is Thursday January 29th from 10 am until 3 pm.  If you would like a ride please email me.  I have watched the safety video and cleared all insurance hurdles necessary to drive the van.  I promise to drive slow and not put any basketballs (or other items for that matter) on top of the vehicle thus drastically altering its center of gravity.

There will be 120 exhibiters – visit this UMO site for more info.

Please respond by THIS FRIDAY (1/23) if you would like to go.

* Job Hunting tips – Some positions (particularly in banking) may require a credit check as part of the application process.  It’s always a good idea to see what your credit looks like beforehand and it’s a way to check to see if you’re a victim of identity fraud.  A relatively new law allows Maine consumers a free credit report once every year.  The form lists the addresses of the 3 major reporting bureaus.  Three stamps, 3 forms, 3 copies of your driver’s license (one dime, one copy, one dime, one copy…) and 5 minutes of your time each year can save a lot of hassle later.  Do it around New Year’s each year so you won’t forget (daylight savings is already reserved for changing smoke detector batteries).

* Career Fair –

The Career Services office is working furiously (really) to coordinate our very own Career Fair.  It will be on Wednesday March 17th.  For a list of other college career fairs click here.

* On-Campus Recruiting –

MBNA is coming to Thomas on Wednesday February 18th.  Calvin Chen, Recruitment Coordinator, will conduct a Full Time Career Opportunities Session from 4-5pm in the Atrium.  There are positions available as:

Customer Satisfaction Specialists, Customer Marketing Account Managers & Customer Assistance Account Managers.  Positions are available in Belfast, Camden & Rockland.

Have a great week!
