Career Services Update - week of January 24, 2005!

* Mark your calendar – A representative from The Washington Center will be visiting Thomas this Thursday (January 27th) from 4:45pm – 6:00pm near the Dining Center.  TWC offers rewarding internships to students in any major down in D.C.  (this was originally scheduled for lunchtime on the 27th).

Please RSVP if you plan to attend the workshop!

Career Services will be hosting a resume workshop on Sunday February 13th at 7:00pm in the Atrium.  The presentation will last around an hour.  Pizza will be served.  This presentation is open to all students – I would greatly appreciate it if you would RSVP.  Thanks!

This Wednesday is UMO’s Career Fair.  From 10am until 3:00pm approximately 120 companies will be in Orono looking to hire Maine graduates – All students are welcome to attend the fair.  (As a side note the Career Services office will be closed that day so that I can attend the fair too).

* Job Hunting Tips   I read an article recently written by Pepi Sappal, the former editor of GlobalHR Magazine, regarding hiring minority talent.  The article wraps up with great advice for all job seekers:

Be responsible for your own career

Build relationships and create visibility through assignments or mentors

Work for an organization with values you believe in.

Be comfortable with who you are (I would add – keeping in mind there’s room for improvement)

Don’t be afraid to blow your own horn.

This is great stuff.  If you can do this you’ll have built a network of colleagues who can help you advance in your current position or escape when times are tough.  The full text of the article can be found here.

* New Jobs  The Career Services website has an up to date listing of employers looking to Thomas students and grads to fill their positions.  Click here to learn more.

Have a great week!
