Career Services Update - week of January 30, 2006!

* Job Hunting – A basic rule of thumb to go by when job hunting goes like this:  If you’re having trouble finding leads on job openings you need to work on your networking skills.  If you’re not getting interviews you need to assess what your resume looks like.  If you’re getting interviews and not landing job offers you need to take a look at your interviewing technique.  Here’s an article from the Wall Street Journal’s career section with more details.

* Mark Your Calendar – Wednesday Feb. 1 marks the annual UMaine Career Fair.  There will be 95 employers in the Fieldhouse in Orono from 10:00am until 3:00pm.  For more info on the fair and a listing of employers that will attend click here.

On February 9th TD Banknorth will be on campus conducting interviews for 3 Auditor and 1 MIS summer internships.  The Internal Audit posting can be found here and the MIS posting here.  I plan to set up the schedule for the interviews this Friday – please submit your application asap to be considered.

The Thomas College Career Fair is slated for March 15.  This is a work in progress – you can check out an up-to-date listing of the companies who are attending by clicking here.

The Maine Recruiting Consortium is sponsoring the Maine Tourism & Hospitality Fair.  The fair will focus on summer jobs, is open to all college students and will be held  Friday April 7th from 1:00 – 4:00pm at the Augusta Civic Center.  You are encouraged to pre-register online prior to the event.

* New Job Openings – The big one this time around is the announcement of the Maine State Government Internship Program for 2006.  This is a competitive program designed to place Maine students in meaningful summer internships throughout state government (most positions are in Augusta).  The deadline to apply is March 20th.  The link has a copy of the application.  You can also pick one up from the Career Services bulletin board near the main lobby.  The program is open to Maine residents who are students and students from away who study in Maine.
