* Job Hunting Tips
– Yesterday I spoke with a recruiter who was at the
UMaine Career Fair (she will also attend our fair on March 16th). She was amazed at the amount of students
looking for work wearing jeans. This
person also shared the story of an applicant who was breezing through an
interview until he was asked if he had any questions for the interviewer. All he could come up with was “will I need to
cut my hair to work here”? Please
understand that you are being evaluated during all phases of the interview process and a misstep in any one area
can rule you out. The hair question
wouldn’t have been as bad if it had been preceded by several questions about
job duties, expectations and opportunities for advancement. Dress appropriately, do some research and ask
intelligent questions. If you don’t –
rest assured someone else will. A huge
pool of applicants can get whittled down very quickly when you factor in
spelling errors on resumes and cover letters, appropriate dress, manners and
communication skills. (that was a long one – sorry I got caught up in the
moment….)
* New Jobs – The Career Services employment minions have added 7
positions to the jobs posting site yesterday alone. Jobs of note include several counselor
positions at summer camps and Upward Bound programs. Click here to learn more.
Also
on the jobs posting site – but worthy or separate mention is the application
for the Maine State
Government Summer Internship Program.
This program, administered by the Margaret
Chase Smith Center for Public Policy,
is open to all Thomas students.
