Career Services Update - week of January 8, 2007!

* Career Services iPod Giveaway – Congratulations to Matt Gatcomb who scored the iPod Nano just for having a resume consultation last semester.  Now Matt has tunes and a spiffy resume.  You should schedule an appointment with Career Services to talk about your career needs today.

* Resume Tips – A constant dilemma for job seekers is how much information to put on a resume.  Whatever you decide to include make sure it tells a compelling story.  Recruiters will look at the first 3 inches of your resume and then decide if they want to read more.   When you factor in your letterhead (with contact information) that doesn’t give you much room to make an impression.  Choose your words carefully.

* Job Hunting Tips – Time marches on and one must learn to embrace the technology.  But when it comes to video resumes you might want to wait a bit.  This article from the Wall Street Journal talks about the rising popularity of this format.  It’s not a method that works for everyone – and it could become a source of embarrassment.  The story outlines the plight of a Yale senior.  His resume includes lots of footage involving weight lifting and ballroom dancing – and next to nothing about transferable skills.  The resume was leaked to YouTube and now the student can’t find work.  A link to the video is included in the article (I only made it to the tennis segment before I decided to bail….).

If you’re looking to make an impression that highlights your skills, work on your e-portfolio.  The Career Services office is here to help you make the right impression.

* New Job Openings –  The Central Maine Growth Council in Waterville is looking for a permanent part-time Development Assistant.   The New England Direct Marketing Assoc. is offering a scholarship with a paid internship.  Bouchard and Associates in Fairfield still has openings for Accounting Interns.

Have a great week!
