* Contest NewsNew Year's Resolutions.  We've all made them.  Career Services would like you to think in terms of New Year's Career Resolutions!  This resolution can be for yourself or for others.  For example, perhaps Martha Stewart's New Year's Career Resolution should be to avoid insider trading...!  That's the contest.  What New Year's resolution, regarding Careers for you or someone you know, can you suggest?  Submit your idea no later than January 27 so that we may have a winner by January 31.  The winner will receive a gift certificate to Subway - their low fat choices are a perfect way to keep your OTHER New Year's resolution!

E-Fair – The Maine Recruiting Consortium has been formed to allow the Career Services Departments of many schools to join forces to provide our students with the best tools available for their job searching.  In this effort, an on-line career fair has been established, with the help of Monster.com.  This is the second year we have participated.  If you click on the e-fair link above, (or go to http://www.thomas.edu/career/efair.htm), you can access the e-fair for the entire month of February.  We have added the necessary password to enter the job fair to our secure job listings page.  This virtual job fair will allow you to browse job listings posted by many employers, nationwide.  It will also allow you to post your resume to enable these employers to learn about you!  Remember, this virtual fair will only be accessible for the month of February.  Contact our office if you have any questions.

* Job Hunting tips - (Adapted from an article in The Employment Times)

One of the most important things in a job search is researching the company.  Remember, you will be spending a significant amount of time at work, and you should know as much as you can about a company before deciding to submit a resume.

Here is how to get the scoop on a company:

1.  Check out their web page.  You can get the web address from their literature, through a phone call, in the employer  section of the Career Services web page, or from a search engine.
Look at the history of the company.  How long have they been in business?
Have they grown?  What are their plans for growth?
2.  Check out Dun & Bradstreet at www.dnb.com.  They are an organization that supplies the public with information about companies worldwide.
3.  Do you know anyone who works for the company?  Check with Career Services.  Getting an insider's information can be extremely valuable.  Ask about the corporate culture, layoffs, contact people, job openings they need to know about.
4.  Use what you've learned to check out other similar companies and compare.

New Year's Resolutions You Can Keep

Are you sick of making the same resolutions year after year that you never keep? Why not promise to do something you can actually accomplish? Here are some resolutions that you can use as a starting point:

1. Gain weight. At least 30 pounds.
2. Stop exercising. Waste of time.
3. Read less. Makes you think.
4. Watch more TV. You've been missing some good stuff.
5. Procrastinate more. Starting tomorrow.
6. Don't date any of the Baywatch cast.
7. Spend more time at work, play solitaire at least once a week.

8. Take a vacation to someplace important: like, to see the largest ball of twine.
9. Don't jump off a cliff just because everyone else did.
10. Stop bringing lunch from home: You should eat out more.

Have a great week!
