Career Services Update - week of February 9, 2004!

* Congratulations – New hire Desirea Wakefield snagged a Marketing internship at the Alfond Youth Center in Waterville (and yes – she paid a visit to the Career Services office for help).  Desirea has graciously allowed us to place her in a spacesuit so that she may test the weightless environment that is our “Stars of the Moment” bulletin board.  This is a galaxy – not unlike our own – where happy people with jobs mingle with the cosmos secure in the knowledge they are gaining valuable experience and bringing home some bacon.  Please let us know about your success by filling out this form.

* Mark your calendar – Tomorrow Robin Kelley, Human Resource Representative of UPS,  will be visiting our campus.  The Waterville Center is in need of a Part-Time Supervisor and Robin hopes you’re the one she’s looking for.  The hours for the position are approximately 4:30 – 9:30 am.   Base pay is $1450 a month.  UPS offers a nice benefit package – including tuition reimbursement of up to $4,000.00 per year.  There is more info on our Jobs website.   Come to the Stickney Room anytime between 11am – 1pm tomorrow February 10 if you are interested in learning more.

MBNA’s visit to Thomas is slated for Wednesday February 25th.  Calvin Chen, Recruitment Coordinator, will conduct a Full Time Career Opportunities Session from 4-5pm in the Stickney Room and he’s bringing food (dinnertime, coincidentally, generally occurs during the time when most studies indicate the average person is hungry).

There are positions available as:

Customer Satisfaction Specialists, Customer Marketing Account Managers & Customer Assistance Account Managers.  Positions are available in Belfast, Camden & Rockland.

 * Job Hunting tips -  I’m sure by now you are aware that next week is winter break. The pressure for you to begin goofing off immediately will be intense.  Your time away is a great opportunity to start working on your resume or to think about (insert laughter here) where you would like to work after school.  You may not find your dream job posted on the internet, but you can research companies and see what types of businesses are in the places you would like to live.  There is no shortage of people looking for work – the better prepared ones are the folks who land jobs.

On a related note the Career Services office will be closed this Friday.  All resumes submitted after Thursday at 4pm will be processed on Monday Feb 16.  I will be in swinging Tamworth, New Hampshire (pop. 2,510) performing in an original radio play that despite being presented in front of a live audience will probably never, ever be heard on a radio station (the things we do for friends……).

* Career Fair – Unity College is having its Environmental Career Fair on Wednesday February 18th  from 10 am until 2 pm.

Our Career Fair (still scheduled for St. Patrick’s Day) is starting to take shape.  This handy link will keep you updated on who is attending.

* Interview tips – The decision to hire someone occurs within the first five minutes of an interview.  Does this mean you can ignore questions after that?  Of course not, but the importance of the first impression can not be overstated.  Keep in mind that the clock is running when you meet a decision maker at a job fair, or call their office for information.  Your resume might be fantastic but if you act like an ________ (insert derogatory comment here) in the events leading up to delivering that resume your “five minutes” may already be up.

* Jobs – Lots of new postings in the past week including offerings from Central Maine Power, Maine Marine Patrol and NES Rentals.  The jobs listing site is an up-to date listing of business who are looking to hire Thomas students and grads.

Have a great week!
