* Job Hunting tips
– Last week a
Career Services Director who shall remain nameless was going through some files
in his office. In one of the cabinets I
found a folder with resumes and cover letters of people who had applied for a
position with Career Services over 2 years ago.
If you’ve figured out that I found my resume among the pile you’re right
(please stop by the office and pick up your free piece of candy).
This
parable gives me a chance to make a point – There may be times when you think a
job is “yours”. In my years as a recruiter
I’ve seen more than a few folks get angry over not getting a position. The fact is you will get turned down for jobs
many more times than you will get jobs.
Learn to accept defeat gracefully.
Try to review your performance (for legal reasons the recruiting company
will generally not tell you why you were not picked) and make corrections to
your resume, interviewing technique, or both.
Most importantly keep looking.
Your job is out there and it may be at a place where you’ve previously
applied (if you haven’t burned that bridge).
* Career Fair – There have been some
additions to our Career Fair list – click here for the
scoop. Our fair is on March 17.
UMF
is having their Career Fair on Thursday, March 11, 2004 from 1:00-4:00pm.
* Interview tips –
If you’ve won
an award or scholarship be prepared to explain what was involved in getting it
– generally, it’s because you’ve accomplished something or were chosen because
you met an academic criteria. You may
not be asked about these things, but if you’ve put it on your resume you need
to be able to explain it. That’s not the
time to sound awkward. If you’d like to
discuss interviewing tips or your resume please email me and set up an appointment.
Have a great week!
