Career Services Update - week of February 3!
* Virtual Career Fair – The e-fair is in progress! In partnership with the Career Services Office, monsterTRAK provides full-time, part-time, temporary and internship opportunities targeted by employers to Thomas College students and alumni. This e-fair was created to serve the students of 22 schools in Maine. It is so easy to use, and only available for the month of February. You may use the password provided on the job posting page, using your infonet pin. It's that easy!
* Mark your calendar – It's that time of year...spring career fairs are popping up everywhere! We've compiled a list that will help you plan which fairs YOU should attend. Click here or go to the Career Services website for more information. Bates College has a fair on Thursday of this week. We have been told that many of these employers are specifically looking to fill internship positions. Click here to see their information, or go to the Bates College website at www.bates.edu. And don't forget, our own spring career fair will be coming on March 19!
* Brown Bag - Rick Whalen, class of '93, is presenting at our next Brown Bag lunch on February 13. Rick will be discussing 'Personal Finances' and will welcome your questions. Rick is the Branch Manager of the Wells Fargo branch located in Bangor.
* Contest News - Congratulations! Christy Sirois is the winner of the January contest. Her entry was chosen as the best entry in our Career New Year's Resolution contest. This is Christy's entry:
* Great website - We recently found a great site if you're looking for work in the Lewiston/Auburn area. The site is called Hire L/A and it can be found at www.hirela.org.
* On-Campus Recruiters - They have received invitations and the reservations are coming in. Make sure to check our On-Campus Recruiting site on a regular basis! (http://www.thomas.edu/career/recruitschedule.htm)
* Survey: IT Job Market May Perk Up - The bleak IT job market may finally be showing signs of improving, according to a survey of human resources executives at technology-oriented businesses recently conducted by TMP Worldwide Executive Search, a unit of TMP Worldwide, Inc., in N.Y.
According to the Web-based survey, 46% of respondents said they plan to increase headcounts over the next year. Twelve percent said they plan to cut headcount over that period, while 42% said they expect no change. On average, tech companies said they plan to increase staff by 3.7% over the next year. That's a turnaround compared to the past 12 months when tech companies said they cut staff by an average of 17.5%. (see www.eweek.com for more information)
* Weekly humor -
You know it's your last day at work when ...
You hand a bank teller an envelope, and when she asks, "What's this?" you
realize you just dropped the company's deposit in a mailbox.
A woman comes into the store, you turn to the other salesman and say, "I
waited on the last fat ugly old lady. This one's your turn". Your boss is
standing behind you. It's his wife.
You spill a Grande Latte with extra whipped cream all over the office's
brand new high speed printer...
You return from a week's vacation to find that you had scheduled *this*
week as vacation, not last week.
Have a great week!
