Career Services Update - week of March 21, 2005!

* Congratulations New Intern! – Michael Warren has become the first Thomas student to be accepted for an internship at The Washington Center.  A CJ major, Michael will intern with a law enforcement agency in D.C. in the fall.  TWC is a Thomas partner and has internships that will accommodate any major with all positions located in our nation’s capital.

* Career Fair Recap –   Student turnout was almost double last year’s total and without a snowstorm to deal with 35 businesses were on hand to speak with our students.  While many recruiters were impressed with a good number of our students they did have some feedback:

Many students were not dressed in business attire (even people in the t-shirt business dress up for meetings…) and a fair amount didn’t have resumes handy.  A decision maker’s job is to judge people – part of that involves judging what they see.  Even if you don’t need a job it’s important that you give the impression that you’re committed to being a hard-working member of a team (they may remember you - and it’s good practice).   Please  keep that in mind when speaking with recruiters in the future.

If you picked up a Monster.com bag at the fair you may have noticed a Student Survey inside.  I’d appreciate it if you’d fill it out and bring it back to my office.  If you do you’re eligible to win a sweatshirt from our bookstore.  I’ve extended the deadline for entries to this Friday.  I’ll announce the winner after break.

In another piece of unfinished Career Fair business – the announcement of the Putnam Investments winners.

The pullover was won by Chris Simpson, ticket #487179

Lindsay Sturm won the keychain, ticket #487172

Rick Manchester won the coffee mug, ticket #487183

The prizes are available at Career Services for pickup.

UMaine Farmington is having their annual Education Job Fair on Monday April 25th.  Thomas students are welcome to attend.  You’ll find more information at this link and you are encouraged to register with UMF here.

* Job Hunting Tips – In his HR Management grad class Dr. Madore mentioned he is frequently called on by HR reps regarding student references.  More often than not they want to know if the person shows up and is on time for class and turns in their work on time.  Was this brought up because just the week before I turned in a paper late?  Perhaps – but I already have a job….  Please remember that if it feels like work it probably is.  Treat your classes like jobs.  Be on time, be focused and ready to contribute.  Your future employers expect the same things.

As this is the last update before break I’d like to remind you that you will probably have chances to network while at home.  Don’t be afraid to speak with your parents about people they know who are working in your field.  There are people in your circle who might be in a position to help you with a job or internship if they knew you were looking.  Let them know.

* New Job Openings – I wanted to take a moment and talk about WorldWide Language Resources.  Located in Rumford, Maine this company provides translators (primarily for the military) all over the world (hence the name).  They are looking for recruiters, accounting and support staff.  Recruiters must be willing to travel throughout the US.  This is a red hot field and it probably will stay that way for a while.  It’s nice to know that there may be an opportunity for you even if you don’t speak a foreign language.

Check out the rest of the openings – including a growing list of summer opportunities here.

Have a great week!
