Update - week of March 7, 2005!
* Congratulations
New Hires – They
applied. They interviewed. They’re employed. Both Derek Dumont and Darrolyn Worcester have
accepted Auditor Internships at Banknorth. These positions are for the summer and will
begin in June.
* Mark your
calendar – We have 36 exhibitors scheduled to take part
in our annual Career Fair on March 16th. An email describing them has been sent to all
students. If you didn’t receive yours let me know. Check out this link for the
list of companies attending and links to their respective websites.
UMaine
Farmington is having their annual Education Job Fair on Monday April 25th. Thomas students are welcome to attend. You’ll find more information at this link and you
are encouraged to register with UMF here.
* Job Hunting Tips
– Prof.
Stephen Turner gave me an article from Sunday’s Kennebec Journal that deals
with the issue of employers Googling their applicants. What many employers are doing is putting an applicant’s
name into Google and viewing webpages that
are related to that person. I mentioned
this in the October
11th issue of the update, but the newspaper article brings up
another point that warrants discussion.
With
the increasing popularity of blogs there’s a chance that your name is in more
places than you think. From disgruntled
boyfriends to partners in crime - if
they have a blog you might be mentioned in it.
Google yourself every so often just to be safe.
* Resume Tips – 20 seconds. That’s the average time spent looking at a
resume before a recruiter decides to keep reading or put you back in the
pile. With that in mind take a look at
the top third of your resume. Does it
show what types of skills you have? Are
the facets most related to your field of interest near the top? Employers want to know what you can do for
them - show them by putting your
valuable, transferable skills at the top of your resume.
Have a great week!
