* Job Hunting - Job future not so bright for many 2003 college graduates
The college class of '03 is facing a tight job market and should be prepared to hunt harder and longer and to lower its expectations. "The working philosophy is 'settle for something less until you can get what you want'," says Obra Hackett, director of career counseling and placement at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi. Career counselors encourage students to consider internships, look outside their field or even stay in school.
"We tell students, 'no matter what your major, you need to develop a diverse set of skills,'" says Theresa Ervin, career services director at Mississippi University for Women based in Columbus.
National outplacement firm Chicago-based Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. says job cuts by U.S. corporations increased 42% in January over December. "The threat of war is causing corporations to put their growth plans on hold," the firm's chief executive, John Challenger says.
