* Mark your calendar – Our Brown Bag lunch series continues this week with a presentation on "Employer/Employee Relations". Sonia Workman, MBNA, will lead this discussion on Wednesday, March 26, at 12:15 in the Board room. Also, make sure you keep checking our On-Campus Recruiting page. This page updates as companies reserve their date to recruit on campus.
* Contest News - The Joy of Work, Dilbert's Guide to Finding Happiness at the Expense of your Co-workers is the prize for this month's Career Services Contest. Wednesday is the last day we will accept entries and voting will be held at the end of this week. This book is filled with great workplace pranks like...
* painting white out on the nails of your co-workers when they grasp the top of your neighbor's cubicle
* taping down the hang-up button then calling your co-worker from a nearby cubicle
* ...and many more!
*All you have to do to enter is forward a good, clean joke for us to use in our update!*
* Job Hunting tips - If you are still looking for a summer job or internship, we've put together some links that may be helpful. Click here for this list of links. ALSO - every Monday morning our office has the weekend editions of the classified ads available for students and alums. These include the Bangor and Portland papers as well as the local Morning Sentinel. You may stop in and take these papers into our interview room to jot down opportunities that appeal to YOU!
* More job hunting tips - NACE reports some creative strategies used by student job seekers:
* Two marketing and communications majors created clever individual marketing pieces to send to prospective employers. The pieces showed their creativity, interests, and skills.
* Students set up information interviews with alumni.
* Students volunteer and network at professional organizations.
* Many pound the pavement and contact employers face-to-face, rather than making initial contact through a cover letter and resume. Some take the initiative to travel to their city of choice to meet with employers in person.
* Multi-tasking: Students work part time while volunteering to gain exposure to various occupations, enhance or develop new skills, and establish contacts.
* A Student created a credit-card-sized CD-ROM about herself and her accomplishments, which she passed out at career fairs and mailed to prospective employers. Several recruiters were very impressed with her initiative.
* A college in the South reports: While other students fly south for spring break, we have students who head north to New York and Boston for informational interviews with alumni and employers.
* Some graduating seniors will take unpaid internships to get into a company of their choice.
* Weekly humor - Golf Challenge
A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to
spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he
could get in 9 holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to
tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could
accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no,
he allowed the old gent to join him.
To his surprise the old man played fairly quickly. He didn't hit the ball
far, but plodded along consistently and didn't waste much time. Finally,
they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough
shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball and it was
directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating
how to hit the shot the old man finally said, "You know, when I was your
age I'd hit the ball right over that tree."
With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the
ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on
the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay. The old man
offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your age that pine tree
was only 3 feet tall."
Have a great week!
