Update - week of April 5, 2004!
* Shake hands with
the Governor (part II) – National
Student Employment Week begins Sunday April 11th. It’s a tribute to the working student –
juggling those priorities, making that cash, getting those grades (hopefully
decent ones at that). This Friday, April
9th, Governor Baldacci will sign a proclamation and two Thomas
students will be right there with him!

* Interview tips –
Be the
S.T.A.R. of your interview. You will be
asked about certain situations in your working past such as “Tell me about a
time when you had to work with a team to accomplish a goal” or “Has there ever
been a time when you were asked to enforce a policy you didn’t agree with” If you think of a
star you’ll have the path to a concise answer:
S – describe
the Situation (I was the shift leader at a retail store)
T – what
was the Task (I was told that
even though my co-worker gave plenty of notice for his vacation he wouldn’t be allowed
to go because of an increased business need – I thought this was unfair but I
had to tell him the news)
A – what
Action did you take (I sat
with my co-worker privately and explained the situation and offered to have him
work the early shift so that he could have his evenings free that week)
R – what
was the Result (he was a
little unhappy at first but when he came to work and saw that sales were up 45%
he began to understand – and he liked having the evenings off, so it worked out)
Spend
a little time thinking of these types of scenarios where you’ve
worked and give them the STAR
treatment – it will go a long way to giving the interviewer a good feel for
your skills.
