Career Services Update - week of April 5, 2004!

* Shake hands with the Governor (part II) – National Student Employment Week begins Sunday April 11th.  It’s a tribute to the working student – juggling those priorities, making that cash, getting those grades (hopefully decent ones at that).  This Friday, April 9th, Governor Baldacci will sign a proclamation and two Thomas students will be right there with him!

Desirea Wakefield has a work study job in our IT department AND a part-time position at Putnam Investments.  She’ll also have an internship this summer.

Samantha Stafford already has a job with a Governor as it is.  The one she works for is the bulbous cartoon character with the top hat and spats - and the great desserts near the highway on Upper Main Street.  Samantha also works for Twin Rivers Mortgage in Newport.

* On Campus visits   Enterprise Rent a Car will be holding an interview session on Tuesday April 13.  To be a part of this you must pre-register by applying online at their website.  Enterprise has already hired JW Brown for their Augusta location – maybe you could be next.

Also, The Army National Guard will have an info session on Tuesday April 13th as well.  Recruiters will be in the Stickney Room WITH PIZZA from 4-6pm.

Crossmark’s Wal-Mart Division is looking for a Customer Service Representative.  Their C/S reps help clients like General Mills, Gerber, Kool Aid, Pillsbury, Smuckers, and Campbell's to name a few.  The position is for a Maine territory covering Farmington, Auburn, Presque Isle, Windham, Augusta, Palmyra, Oxford, Mexico, Brewer, and Biddeford.

Janet Keene, a retail supervisor with Crossmark, will be visiting our campus on  Wednesday April 14th.  Betty-Jane Meader has graciously allowed Janet to speak to her two marketing classes that day – and I am working on more.  If you are interested in a position with Crossmark (did I mention you get a company car?) please let me know.

* Career Fair – The Central Maine Community College Career Fair runs this Thursday from 3-7 pm AND this Friday from 9am-3pm in the Kirk Hall.

UMF’s Education Career Fair is Monday April 26th from 1-4pm in Dearborn Gym.  For more info follow this handy link.

* Interview tips – Be the S.T.A.R. of your interview.  You will be asked about certain situations in your working past such as “Tell me about a time when you had to work with a team to accomplish a goal” or “Has there ever been a time when you were asked to enforce a policy you didn’t agree with  If you think of a star you’ll have the path to a concise answer:

Sdescribe the Situation  (I was the shift leader at a retail store)

Twhat was the Task (I was told that even though my co-worker gave plenty of notice for          his vacation he wouldn’t be allowed to go because of an increased business need – I thought this was unfair but I had to tell him the news)

A what Action did you take (I sat with my co-worker privately and explained the situation and offered to have him work the early shift so that he could have his evenings free that week)

Rwhat was the Result (he was a little unhappy at first but when he came to work and saw that sales were up 45% he began to understand – and he liked having the evenings off, so it worked out)

Spend a little time thinking of these types of scenarios where you’ve  worked and give them the STAR treatment – it will go a long way to giving the interviewer a good feel for your skills.

* New Jobs – There’s been some action on the Job Posting Page since you’ve been away.  Click the link to see what’s happening.

Have a great week!
