Career Services Update - week of April 19, 2004!

* E Portfolio Madness – Starting in the fall students at Thomas will have the ability to create an e portfolio.  This will give you a chance to document your learning experience and allow you an opportunity to reflect on the skills you have developed while at college.  This will be stored on the school’s server and can be used when job hunting too.

The plan is to unveil the idea of an e portfolio to freshmen attending the summer orientation in mid-June.  I think our presentation to the new students would be much more effective if we had an e portfolio from a current student.  I need your help to do that and I’m willing to pay.

I need:

a student who will be returning next year.

who can demonstrate they’ve met (or are working on) the Thomas College Core Competencies of Communications, Leadership & Service, Mathematical & Analytical Reasoning, Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities.

who is available to speak June 19th at the Orientation (this would be nice, but is not a deal killer).

I am offering a $100.00 gift certificate to the Book Store as compensation.  If you are interested please email me.

* New Jobs – Tasty selections on our jobs website include a Collection Specialist position at Irving Tanning (Hartland) and a summer Training/Organizational Development position with Bath Iron Works (in Bath – but you knew that).  The site is updated whenever new jobs come in – so check it a couple times a week.

* Job Hunting tips – As it gets warmer outside folks start firing up their grills at home

and perhaps do some entertaining.  If you’re in the company of strangers take a minute to introduce yourself and find out what your guests (or hosts – work with me here) do for a living.  Most people like to talk about themselves and this is a chance for you to do some much needed networking – they may know of an opening at their business.  Sure it’s easier to focus on what burgers the dog licked but that won’t get you a job.  Don’t be afraid to meet some new people when you’re out and about.

* Career Fair – UMF’s Education Career Fair is Monday April 26th from 1-4pm in Dearborn Gym.  For more info follow this handy link.

Have a great week!
