Career Services Update - week of September 13, 2004!

* Mark your calendar  Putnam Investments will be on campus starting next Monday.  Monday through Wednesday (9/20-22) by the art gallery and Thursday and Friday (9/23 & 24) by the cafeteria.  Keith Hession and/or Marla Addison will be on hand each day from 11am until 3pm to discuss the positions that are available.  Putnam’s facility is on our campus so that will save on gas.  If you want to get a jump on things we have applications in the Career Services office.

Dan Alley, the Director of Human Resources for Macdonald Page Schatz Fletcher, will be on campus October 14th to interview for Staff Accountant positions.  There will be openings in Augusta and Portland.  If you are interested in a full or part-time tax season internship next semester Dan wants to talk to you as well.  To get an interview you must first submit your resume to Career Services.  You can email them  here.  Resumes will then be forwarded to Dan for consideration.  An interview would then be set up by the Career Services office with you.  If you have any questions regarding either position please feel free to contact Dan directly at 622-4766.

A representative from The Washington Center  will be visiting campus on Tuesday October 5th.  TWC offers internship opportunities that match your academic/professional goals and they’re located where the action is – in Washington, D.C.  Their website explains more and I have brochures if you’d like to stop by and pick one up.

* Job Hunting tips -  If you believe what I’ve read (and I’ve read it dozens of times) most jobs out there aren’t advertised in a traditional way (newspaper classifieds or the internet).  I ran into an old friend who was out of work for almost a year.  He had applied to many ads, mostly to the postings on jobsinme.com with no luck.  He then got a line on a job from a friend and applied, was interviewed, and was offered an IT position.  Ultimately his skills got him the job, but his ability to network had acquaintances looking out for him.  This put him ahead of his competition.  To learn more about productive networking check out this article from the Wall Street Journal.

* Choices – We’re working on a formal PowerPoint presentation that will fully explain what Choices Planner can do for you – In short it’s a tool you can access online to help you learn more about yourself and the types of work that might be a good fit for you.  It has worksheets to help you build a resume and to assist with networking too.  Feel free to visit Choices Planner.  To log into the system the Site ID is 0101337 and our Password is thomas (all lower case).  I’ll have more info on this in a later issue.

Have a great week!
