Career Services Update - week of September 8, 2003!

* Welcome back!  - It is great to see the halls filled with students again - we missed you this summer!  To our NEW students, we'd like to introduce our office.  We are located on the second floor of the Administration building in room 223A.  You may have noticed the flow of students stopping into our office to visit our bottomless candy dish.  Please, come in and introduce yourself and take a DumDum or Smartie - we would love to meet you.  We also have binders containing information on recent job and internship opportunities.  If you would like to learn more about our office, check out our website.  Look for our weekly updates every Monday, and welcome to Thomas!

* Mark your calendars – We're already at it!  September 15 is the first Brown Bag lunch from 12:15 - 1:15 in the Stickney Room.  If you are thinking about applying to Grad schools after you receive your bachelor's from Thomas College, then you cannot afford to miss our discussion about the Graduate School Admission Process.  Our featured speaker is our very own Dr. Thomas Edwards.  Upcoming Brown Bag discussions will include Resume and Cover Letter tips, Interview Techniques, Marketing Yourself, Employer Expectations, Financial Planning and more!  These informal discussions take place during the scheduled lunch break - bring your lunch or pick up something in the cafeteria.

Also...  Attention SENIORS! - We've scheduled our Senior Cookie Days for September 24 & 25.  You don't want to miss out on this opportunity to learn how to best use your Career Services office as you plan for your future.  May (or December for those lucky few...) is right around the corner!  Look for more information coming soon...

* Recruiters!  - We've already had several companies contact our office to reserve their on-campus recruitment date.  What is On-Campus Recruiting?  Click here to learn more or check out our Fall 2003 Recruiting Schedule.  Remember to bookmark this site as we update our recruiting schedule often!

* Contest NewsYou all know the STANDARD sections of a resume (Education, Experience, Etc.) but how many of you can think of a SECTION YOU'RE LEAST LIKELY TO SEE ON A RESUME?  For those of you who are new to campus, our office holds a monthly contest and our prizes have consisted of pizza coupons, free ice cream, or even movie passes.  We created a website of Top Ten Things NOT to Say in a Job Interview using entries from that contest last year.  Check out this site to get an idea of what we are looking for.  You can enter this contest by e-mailing your ideas into our office, or just stopping in!  We'll post them on our bulletin board and judging will begin at the end of the month.  Good luck!

* Job Hunting tips -  Are you ready?  Those of you who are preparing to begin job hunting must have an updated resume.  We would be happy to review your resume and make suggestions for improvement.  Simply e-mail your resume to our office and we'll respond with a time to meet and discuss your job hunting strategy.  What are you waiting for?

* Career Information Day On Monday, October 6, Thomas College will host a Career Information Day.  The purpose of this day is to expose students to a variety of professionals who have graduated with degrees that we offer here at Thomas.  You will learn that one degree may open several different types of opportunities for you.  Look for more information in future editions of our weekly update.

Subscription Offer - The New York Times has offered a special rate for all students, faculty and staff.  To save up to 60% of the newsstand price, stop into the Career Services office for a form.

* Weekly humor - Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip.
As they lay down for the night, Holmes said, "Watson, look up into the sky and tell me what you see?"
Watson replied, "I see millions of stars."
Holmes queried, "And what does that tell you?"
Watson explained,  "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Philosophically, it tells me  we are small and insignificant.  Meteorologically, it tells me that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?"
Holmes responded, "Somebody stole our tent."

Have a great week!
