* Good news! Employers project increasing their hires by 12.7% for the 2003-04 academic year, according to the results of NACE's Job Outlook 2004 Fall Preview Survey. There is room for cautious optimism: This represents the first time since 2000-01 that employers are projecting an overall increase in the number of new college graduates they plan to hire. More than half of all respondents (50.7%) said they'll hire more new grads for entry-level positions this year than they did last year, while slightly more than a quarter (28%) plan to cut back on their hires. In addition, 21.3% anticipate no change in hiring levels.
By region, changes in college hiring plans are most significant in the Northeast, where employers expect to increase hiring by 15.3%! Specific hiring projections for the Northeast: 55% of the responding employers expect to increase hiring; 15% expect to maintain last year's level; and 30% expect to decrease hiring. Overall, employers expect to hire 15.3% more college grads this year.
* Weekly humor -
A magician was performing on a cruise ship, and since the audience was
different each week, he repeated the same tricks. The captain's parrot
watched the show every week and learned the secrets of the magician's
tricks. During the show the parrot would then reveal the secrets to the
audience by squawking, "Look, it's not the same hat!" or "He's hiding the
flowers under the table!" or "All the cards are the Ace of Spades."
The magician was furious but felt powerless to control the captain's parrot.
One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself adrift
on a piece of wood, and discovered the parrot by his side. They stared at
each other, but did not utter a word. This went on for hours until finally
the parrot finally inquired, "Okay, I give up. What did you do with the
ship?"
Have a great week!
