Career Services Update - week of October 6, 2003!

* Mark your calendar – Maurices is a new clothing store coming to the Elm City!  Their store manager has requested that students who are interested in a part-time job, come in and sign up to interview.  She'll be coming to campus to interview on Friday, October 10.  If you're interested, stop into the Career Services office and sign up for your chance to interview.

* Contest NewsWe've decided we need to better meet your needs as candy consumers.  Everyone has a favorite, but we need to know what the majority of students would like to see in order to ensure that the most students are happy.  So, to enter this month's contest, all you have to do is let us know your favorite candy!  This one is too easy!  E-mail or stop in with your entry on a piece of scrap paper.  Everyone wins, because our candy dish will reflect the popular vote, and ALL entries will be used to draw one name and that winner will receive a bag of their favorite candy!  Remember, Faculty and Staff are encouraged to enter too!  Click here to e-mail your entry now!

Congratulations to Shelly Desiderio!  Shelly entered last month's winning entry to the contest "What is the LEAST likely section to find on a resume"?  Shelly's entry?  CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS!  Thank you Shelly, and all who participated.

News for Job Hunters -  First, the good news....

Many employers expect to strengthen their hiring activity in the fourth quarter of 2003, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.  Seven of the 10 industry sectors --- construction, education, finance/insurance/real estate, public administration, services, transportation/public utilities, and wholesale retail trade --- expect to offer more job opportunities in the fourth quarter than they did in the July-September period.  The fourth quarter job outlook for manufacturing is stable across the board, with both durable and non-durable goods manufacturers reporting employment levels identical to last quarter.  Mining is the only sector in which job growth is expected to slow.

Then the not so good news...

OPPORTUNITIES, SALARY OFFERS DIP FOR GRADS WITH COMPUTER-RELATED DEGREES.  Employment opportunities and starting salary offers for 2002-2003 graduates with computer-related degrees have decreased during the past year, according to a report published by the Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology (CPST).  The report notes that employment opportunities for grads with computer-related degrees dipped by 6 percent.  Salary offers to computer science grads dropped 4.4 percent to an average of $47,419, while information science grads' average offer fell 6 percent to $39,787, according to the CPST.

Thank you – The Career Services office would like to thank all of the Career Information Day speakers who took time out of their busy schedules to come and speak with our students.  This is the first year that our office has organized this event and we would appreciate any feedback from students who participated.  Did you think this event was a good learning experience?  Would you attend another Career Information Day event?  What would you change about the event for future years?  Please e-mail any comments to the Career Services office.  Thank you for your help!

* Weekly humor -

A frog telephones the Psychic Hotline and is told, "You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you."

The frog says, "This is great! Will I meet her at a party, or what?"

"No," says the psychic. "Next semester in her biology class."

Have a great week!
