Career Services
Update - week of November 15, 2004!
* Mark your
calendar – Woodford’s Family Services,
a non-profit social services organization, will be on campus Tuesday November
16th near the dining center from 11am until 1pm. They are interested in talking to psych
majors or anyone interested in a Family Support Specialist position.
* E-Portfolio
TV/DVD Raffle – This fall Thomas’ e-portfolio project began
in earnest with the introduction to first year students. In an effort to encourage all students to
create and use an electronic portfolio Career Services is dangling a 20 inch
carrot with dvd player. Yes, it’s
shameless – and the thought of an institution of higher learning promoting
academic, personal and professional growth alongside a TV giveaway may be
repulsive to some. But if you’re the TV
winner, will you care what others say about you? Of course not. Think of all the wonderful time-wasting moments
television has given us and read on to see how to win.
Between
now and December 10th any day
student who creates and puts at least 3 documents in an e-portfolio is
eligible for the drawing. If you’ve
already created an e-portfolio you’re in the drawing (providing there are 3
documents in the portfolio). To view how
to create an e-portfolio follow the directions
located here. If you are not an FS110 student you must give me (Bill Schissler)
access to view the portfolio (that’s how I can put you in the drawing). The directions show how this is done – you
should also consider giving your advisor access as well.
During
Finals week, one student will be selected at random and that person will win
the TV/DVD player. Career Services employees
are not eligible – (sorry ladies, when you take MG442 you’ll understand…)
To
assist you I am offering 2 E-Portfolio Workshops in Room 122
Wednesday
November 17 at 4:00pm
Monday
November 29 at 3:30pm
They
only take about half an hour.
* Job Hunting Tips
– According to the National Association of Colleges
and Employers Job Outlook 2005 Survey the #1 attribute employers look for when
hiring is communication skills. Honesty
was next followed by good
interpersonal/teamwork skills. Motivation and a strong work ethic were also listed.
How do you convey these ideas without saying you’re a hardworking,
honest, motivated team worker with good communication skills in your resume?
You’ll
show you’re an effective communicator by writing a concise, compelling resume
and cover letter. By outlining a
relevant (and consistent) work history you’ll demonstrate your work ethic. By not falsifying your resume you won’t get
tripped up in your interview – that will show how honest your are. Motivated applicants make themselves
available for interviews and research the company they are applying to. Please come see me if you would like any help
with your resume or cover letter.
Have a great week!
