Career Services Update - week of November 22, 2004!

* Congratulations New Hire – Karla Brannen will spend tax season as an intern in Portland at Dawson, Smith, Purvis & Bassett.

* E-Portfolio TV/DVD Raffle –  This raffle is open to any day student!!!!

Between now and December 10th any day student who creates and puts at least 3 documents in an e-portfolio is eligible for the drawing.  If you’ve already created an e-portfolio you’re in the drawing (providing there are 3 documents in the portfolio).  To view how to create an e-portfolio follow the directions located here.   If you are not an FS110 student you must give me (Bill Schissler) access to view the portfolio (that’s how I can put you in the drawing).  The directions show how this is done – you should also consider giving your advisor access as well.

During Finals week, one student will be selected at random and that person will win the TV/DVD player

To assist you I am offering an E-Portfolio Workshop in Room 122 Monday November 29 at 3:30pm.  It will only take about half an hour.

* Job Hunting Tips –  According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers Job Outlook 2005 Survey your appearance in an interview matters.  This year decision makers are less tolerant than in years past.  Almost half of the employers surveyed indicated that if you wear non-traditional business attire to your interview it would negatively impact the outcome (so you should always wear a business suit).  General grooming had a strong influence on 70% of respondents (not to mention their olfactory organs).  Non traditional hair (color or style), body piercings (that can be seen), obvious tattoos and a bad handshake all have a negative impact with at least 25% of the recruiters surveyed.

Hey – don’t dismiss that lump on the couch this Thursday.  Remember, holiday gatherings are a great place for networking.  Don’t be afraid to ask family and friends what they’re up to and who they’re hiring this holiday season.  If you’re in the market for a job let them know.  They have to help you (that’s what a family is for).

Career Services will be closed Tuesday (11/23) and will re-open Monday 11/29

Have a great week!
