Career Services Update - week of November 29, 2004!

* Congratulations New Hires – Steph Pelotte has secured an internship for tax season here in Waterville with CPA firm Achramowicz & Johnson.

Proving it’s a great time be named Stefanie (even if it’s spelled differently) Stefanie Rioux has accepted an internship AND full-time position after graduation with Macdonald, Page Schatz, Fletcher.

* Mark your calendar – Sgt. Paul Pelletier of the Army National Guard will pay a recruiting visit to our campus next Thursday (December 9th).  From 11am until 1pm the sergeant will be deployed outside the dining center.

* E-Portfolio TV/DVD Raffle –  This raffle is open to any day student!!!!

The TV is in my office.  Come check it out and then make that baby yours by creating an e-portfolio.  That will enter you in the drawing.  Between now and December 10th any day student who creates and puts at least 3 documents in an e-portfolio is eligible for the drawing.  If you’ve already created an e-portfolio you’re in the drawing (providing there are 3 documents in the portfolio).  To view how to create an e-portfolio follow the directions located here.   If you are not an FS110 student you must give me (Bill Schissler) access to view the portfolio (that’s how I can put you in the drawing).  The directions show how this is done – you should also consider giving your advisor access as well.

During Finals week, one student will be selected at random and that person will win the TV/DVD player

I can set you up in a brand spanking new e-portfolio in less than 20 minutes with no money down!!!!!  Please email me and make an appointment.

* Job Hunting Tips –  The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has published their annual Corporate Equality Index on GLBT Social Responsibility.  The report, launched in 2002, evaluates how major US corporations treat GLBT employees, consumers and investors.  The scores are based on responses and research to questions concerning non-discrimination, benefits and diversity management and training (among others).  You may find this useful when looking for an employer that embraces diversity.

Is it OK to say “I don’t know” in an interview?  Believe it or not it is.  Generally, being honest is a much more effective tactic than being wrong or dishonest.  93% of the programs on TV Land illustrate this point perfectly (interestingly, the other 7% deal with grooming issues).  It is essential that you prepare properly for your interview.  Know what the company does, get an idea of the challenges they face and try to picture how you would fit in.  Then if you’re stumped on one question it won’t look bad to say you don’t have an answer (the decision maker may even be impressed).  The Wall Street Journal’s career section has more on this topic here.

* New Jobs – New Jobs to the Career Services web site include a Legal Secretary Position at the Disability Rights Center in Augusta and a Hedge Fund Accountant at Citigroup.

Have a great week!
