Career Services Update - week of December 15, 2003!

* New Director of Career Services – Santa came early this year!  Thomas College has a new director of Career Services.  Bill Schissler has joined our committed staff and is already hard at work on the second floor.   Stop into the office and introduce yourself or e-mail any questions to Bill.  If you’re looking for Mary-Anne, stop into the CED/Grad office (across the hall from the library) to say hello or put in any new requests for candy!

* December Grads - Remember, if you have a job please let us know by filling out your senior survey on-line!  This is a quick and easy form that let's us know where you are going to be working.  If you are not employed, we want to know that, too!  It's never too late to work with our office.  Call (859-1106) or e-mail to set up and appointment today.

* Job search sites – If you are looking for jobs on-line, there are a plenty of great sites that our students have found to be helpful that feature jobs in Maine and we’ve listed a small selection of them below.  Visit the Career Services webpage to find more helpful sites.

* JOB OUTLOOK WINTER UPDATE -  : POSITIVE HIRING - PROJECTIONS HOLD FIRM - To update hiring projections for the Class of 2004 and gather additional information about employer activity, NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) surveyed 222 employers from November 19 through December 3, 2003; 150, or 67.6 percent, responded. Here are some of the results:

 * Positive hiring projections are holding firm. In an earlier survey

(the Job Outlook 2004 Fall Preview), employers said they

expected to hire 12.7 percent more new college graduates in

2003-04 than they hired in 2002-03. In this most recent survey,

nearly 70 percent of respondents said their hiring plans are

holding firm. Among those revising their projections upward or

downward, the resulting changes nearly cancelled each other

out.

* Campus Activities: Employer Plans for Spring 2004

* 76.4 percent of respondents plan to attend career fairs in the spring.

* 60.8 percent plan to offer information sessions.

* 59.5 percent plan to be on campus to recruit full-time hires.

* 58.8 percent plan to be on campus to recruit interns/co-ops.

* Weekly humor – How to Write a Paper

1.  Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a well lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.

2.  Read over the assignment carefully, to make certain you understand it.

3.  Walk down to the vending machines and buy some coffee to help you concentrate.

4.  Stop off at the third floor, on the way back and visit with your friend from class. If your friend hasn't started the paper yet either, you can both drive to McDonald's and buy a hamburger to help you concentrate. If your friend shows you his paper, typed, double-spaced, and bound in one of those irritating see-thru plastic folders, drop him.

5.  When you get back to your room, sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.

6.  Read over the assignment again to make absolutely certain you understand it.

7.  You know, you haven't written to that kid you met at camp since fourth grade. You'd better write that letter now and get it our of the way so you can concentrate.

8.  Go look at your teeth in the bathroom mirror.

9.  Listen to your favorite cd and that's it, I mean it, as soon as it's over you are going to start that paper.

10.  Listen to one more.

11.  Rearrange all of your CDs into alphabetical order.

12.  Phone your friend on the third floor and ask if he's started writing yet. Exchange derogatory remarks about the cafeteria, your ex, and last week's weekly update.

13.  Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.

14.  Read over the assignment again; roll the words across your tongue; savor its special flavor.

15.  Check the newspaper listings to make sure you aren't missing something truly worthwhile on TV. NOTE: When you have a paper due in less than 12 hours, anything on TV from Masterpiece Theater to Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, is truly worthwhile, with these exceptions: a) Pro Bowler's Tour b) movie starring Don Ameche.

16.  Catch the last hour of Blue Lagoon on channel 26.

17.  Phone your friend on the third floor to see if he was watching. Discuss the finer points of the plot.

18.  Go look at your tongue in the bathroom mirror.

18.5. Look through your roommate's book of pictures from home. Ask who everyone is.

19.  Sit down and do some serious thinking about your plans for the future.

20.  Open your door and check to see if there are any mysterious trench-coated strangers lurking in the hall.

21.  Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.

22.  Read over the assignment one more time, just for the hell of it.

23.  Scoot your chair across the room to the window and watch the sunrise.

24.  Lie face down on the floor and moan.

25.  Leap up and write the paper.

Have a great week and a safe and happy holiday.
