Information for Prospective Students with Disabilities
Information for Prospective Students
Thomas College, although it has no organized
academic programs for individuals with disabilities, is committed to providing
academic accommodations and access to College facilities as needed. Prospective
students are welcome to discuss available services and potential needs with the
Director of the Center for Academic Success or the Vice-President for Student
Affairs. These conversations are confidential and do not affect the admission
decision, which is based, as it is for all students, on the standards outlined
in the Thomas College Catalog.
Students requesting accommodations or modifications
provide the office of the Vice-President for Student Affairs or the Director of
the Center of Academic Success (CAS) with a current professional evaluation that
identifies the disability, describes the challenges that exist because of the
condition, and recommends appropriate and reasonable modifications. These
materials are confidential and will not be released without the student’s
permission. The College accepts as current documentation completed within the
three years prior to a student’s request for accommodations. Accordingly, the
College urges prospective students to make sure evaluation and documentation
material is in order at the time of application and submit the required material
as soon as possible—whether or not the student intends to request
accommodations.
Accommodations for students with physical
disabilities include classroom assignments and housing that ensure students’
access to and participation in academic and residential life. Students with
learning disabilities are entitled to “reasonable accommodations” that allow
students to participate in the regular program of study. These may include
extended time on examinations, alternative exam formats, use of tape recording,
special seating arrangements, a separate room for examinations, etc. Individual
needs and proper consideration for the integrity of Thomas College programs of
study determine all accommodations, which are determined on a case-by-case
basis.
Students who would like more information, including
specific information about requirements for verification of the disability, may
contact any of the following College offices: Admissions, Student Affairs,
Center for Academic Success, and Academic Affairs. It is important that students
inform the College of their needs, provide timely information and documentation,
and comply with deadlines and agreements throughout the accommodation process.
The College welcomes the opportunity to assist prospective students in this
process.
