What is CAS?
The Thomas College Center for Academic Success (CAS) is a
free service available to all Thomas students. Students use the CAS to improve
their academic performance--any student is welcome to use the services of the
CAS for this reason. Sometimes faculty refer students to the center, but most
often students use the facility on their own initiative. Students also use the
CAS for extracurricular reasons, such as getting help for writing a job or
scholarship application letter. Many students who never needed tutoring or extra
help in high school find they may need help in adjusting to the demands of
college. The added independence of college requires greater discipline. The CAS
can help students develop effective and efficient study skills.
Services
The CAS provides individual tutoring and small group instruction for
study skills (such as test-taking and time management), writing, reading
efficiency, math, accounting, computers, finance, and economics. Tutoring in
specific courses is also available. Supplemental Instruction (SI) services for
selected courses are also available for students.
Staff
The CAS is staffed by a Director, Ms. McQuiston; a Writing and
Learning Specialist; student tutors and SI leaders. These
work-study students have been selected by a faculty members in the appropriate
departments for their competence and their ability to communicate their
knowledge to others.
Location
The CAS is located in room 128, next to the computer lab on the first
floor of the Administration Building. (It is near the vending machines and the
bookstore as well!)
Availability
Tutors arrange their schedules at the beginning of each semester.
Most tutors schedule their hours afternoons and evenings from Sunday to
Thursday. Once the schedules are determined, they are posted outside the CAS and
on bulletin boards throughout the buildings. Resident assistants have copies of
schedules, and faculty announce the tutors' hours in their classes. Any student
can check the hours by clicking
HERE, or by
viewing the Thomas College
Daily Information Page.
Although students are welcome to "drop in" for help anytime a tutor is
scheduled to work, appointments can be made if a student needs a different time.
