Q. When can I move in?
A. Move-in dates and times are different for first year students and returning students. As a rule of thumb, first year students move in the morning of orientation and returning students move in the day prior to classes starting. Student athletes receive information from their coaches prior to the start of the season indicated when check in day will be and students in the EDGE program will receive information on specific move in day/time as well. Information on Fall 2014 move in days and times for all resident students will be posted mid-summer on the Residential Life and Housing Home page.

Q. What should I bring to college?
A. The following items are recommended to bring with you, however, it is important to contact your roommate(s) before arriving to classes. Some items you may want to share with your roommate(s) and only one of you will need to bring some of these items. It is a good idea to talk with that person ahead of time to try to coordinate. Keep in mind that College-owned furniture may not be removed from student rooms

Q. What should I leave at home?
A. Safety regulations prohibit candles (including decorative ones), incense, firearms, explosives, hazardous chemicals, knives, weapons or mock-weapons of any type, toasters, toaster ovens, hot plates, coffeemakers including Keurig or like machines, non surge protector extension cords, BBQ grills, George Foreman Grills (or those of a similar nature), Smores makers, waffle makers (and all other identical cooking devices), and pets (other than fish in approved sized tanks) in the residence halls.  Halogen lamps and "octopus" style lamps are prohibited due to the safety issues related to both. Weightlifting devices are also prohibited in the residence halls.

Q. Are you looking to pack "green" style?
A. Consider the following items:
*Cloth bags to replace plastic or paper
*A Bike - to get around campus (if walking is not your style) and the Waterville area
*Re-useable mugs - some places even offer discounts if you bring your own mug.
*Energy Star appliances - from stereos, TVs, printers, computers, lamps, microwaves and more - there are plenty of energy star appliances to choose from. 
*Power strips - help save energy when you are not using items by plugging them into a power strip
*Compact florescent bulbs - better than the incandescent bulbs
*Tupperware - save the environment from excess Styrofoam, plastic and aluminum wrap.

Q. What size are the mattresses - regular or extra-long?

A. Different rooms have different mattress sizes, however, the majority of mattresses in the residence halls are extra long (80") SUGGESTION AND RULE OF THUMB:  Extra long beds are only about 3-4 inches longer than standard beds - as such, extra long bedding will fit a standard bed without a problem - especially if you use an egg-crate or other mattress pad underneath.  Since you will probably have an extra-long bed at some point during your Thomas College career, it is suggested that all bedding be fitted for an extra long bed.

Q. How long will I be in a triple?

A. There will be minimal triples as we begin our Fall 2014 semester and they will be reserved for upper-class or transfer students (they will be located in the Village/upper-class housing). Although you may live with your roommates through the year, some residents living in triples may be split up within the first semester on campus. Triples are assigned regularly, and we have found for the most part, students have had a good experience. Groups were well matched, and in some cases, students decided to stay with one, or both of the roommates at the end of the year when selecting housing for the following year.

Q. What are my room measurements going to be?

A. The residence halls (Grant, Heath and Parks), the Village, Bartlett Hall and the Townhouses have different floor measurements and are set up differently.

GPH residence hall rooms are 12'x16' with a window size of 30" across the top and 70" from top to bottom.

Hinnman Hall has four 27-person "pods" with 12 double rooms and 3 single rooms.  Double rooms are 16'5"x12'6" and single rooms are 16'5"x8'5".

Village rooms measures 12'x19' with a window size of   3'5" across the top and  4'5" from top to bottom.  Measurements do not include an in-room bathroom.

Bartlett singles measure 9'7"x11'8" and include a closet space where Bartlett doubles measure 12'9"x19'1" and include a double closet area.  Single windows in Bartlett measure 34.5" across the top and 58.25" from top to bottom.  Double windows in Bartlett measure 70.5" across the top and 58.5" from top to bottom.

Measurements for the Townhouse suites are varied.  Single rooms average 10'x7' and double rooms are approximately 15'x12'.  Each townhouse also includes a small common living space on the first floor for all residents of the townhouse to share.  Each room includes a closet space, desk, desk chair and dresser.

Q. What are rooms furnished with?
A. All residences are furnished with twin beds which are bunkable, dressers, desks with desk chairs, and closet wardrobes (2 1/2' x 4 1/2' x 6'). Additionally, each Village room has its own bathroom. Bartlett Hall is comprised of 5 and 6 room suites with one to two bathrooms accordingly. The new townhouse suites will offer a two story building with 6 singles, 1 double, a small common area and one bathroom on each floor per townhouse suite. Rooms are designated as either singles, doubles or triples and are furnished accordingly regardless of how many students are assigned to the room.  All assigned furniture must remain in the rooms throughout the year and in the manner in which it was intended.

Q. Are the rooms carpeted?

A. The residence hall rooms at Thomas College have tiled floors. Students are allowed to bring carpet, and many students find good quality remnants at local stores. Students also sometimes choose not to purchase carpet, but bring smaller area rugs from home.

Q. How do I do my laundry on campus?

A. Each residence hall is equipped with laundry machines - each machine costs $1.25 per load. The machines accept the "Smart Card" sold in the Student Center across from the cafeteria; they do not accept coins. The Smart Card that you purchase will allow you to use the Maytag washers and dryers in the residence halls. To begin using this equipment you must first place money on your card. You will have to go to the Cash to Card machine located in the Student Center near the Dining Center. The initial card costs $2.00. If you put $5.00 into the Cash to Card machine for the first time, you would receive a smart card with $3.00 worth of value on it. Once you have a card, you can then add additional funds to that card with a five, ten or twenty dollar bill.

Once you have a card and wish to add more value to it, place your card in the slot on the upper left side of the machine; while your card is still in the machine, place a bill into the bill acceptor face up. The bill will be drawn into the machine and the value will be added to the balance on your card. You may use $5.00, $10.00, or $20.00 dollar bills. Treat your smart card like you would any other debit card. If you loose your smart card, it is just like losing cash and there is no refund or replacement of card. If your card does get lost or damaged, you may purchase another from the cash to card machine for $2.00.

Q. Are single rooms available?

A. Single rooms for first year residents are limited. Upper class students have the option of living in a single room in Bartlett Hall and the Townhouse suites as well. Upper class students interested in residing in a single room need to go through the Room Lottery at the end of each Spring semester. First year students can note a single room preference on their housing forms (single rooms will be predominantly located in Hinman Hall as available and at an additional cost). Single rooms in Parks Hall measure 7'10" x 16'.

Q. Can I change my roommate?

A. First year students will work with their Resident Assistant at the beginning of the year to complete roommate contracts for each room in order to open up the lines of communication early. If there are roommate concerns, residents are encouraged to work with their Resident Assistant and Area Coordinator through a mediation process. Although room changes are possible, every effort will be made by the Residential Life Staff to assist roommates in addressing their differences and keep them together. Contact your Area Coordinator for a Change of Room Request form or for more information.  Please note that there is a two week housing freeze at the beginning of each semester.

Q. Does Thomas College provide internet access?

A. Yes! Thomas College does provide a dial up number for students to use while living on campus; however, additional dial up accounts can be paid for through local service providers. Also, wireless connections are located throughout campus and some classrooms are equipped for wireless access as well. Q. What type of security is there for the residence halls?

A. All students are issued identification cards at the beginning of the year. These cards not only allow a student to eat in the Dining Center, use the Athletic Center, take part in many campus events, and to borrow books in the library, but are programmed for each individual student to gain access to the building they live in. Students access into buildings by an ID card swipe system which allows only residents of that building to enter. In Bartlett Hall, you need to swipe into the main entrance as well as the floors and individual suites. Public Safety is open and available to students 24/7 and offers escort services around campus upon request and there are blue lights located in many of the parking areas around the residences.

Q. When are college breaks scheduled?
A. College breaks are scheduled many times throughout the school year. To view all breaks and academic dates, please view the calendar on the Thomas College home page, or click here. A reminder that for certain breaks, housing is closed. It is the responsibility of the student to plan accordingly for transportation and housing needs during these breaks.

Q. What staff is available to students in the residence halls?

A. Each floor is assigned a Resident Assistant (RA).  RA's are upper-class students who were selected the semester prior as student leaders to assist residents in their residential experience.  Each night that the residence halls are open, there is at least one RA on duty for each area of campus (GPH, Bartlett/Village/Hinman and Townhouses).  There are three professional live-in staff members (Area Coordinators) who oversee the RA staff and day to day operations of residential life and housing.  The Area Coordinators work closely with the Assistant Dean of Students in providing the best experience and response possible to the residents.  There is a professional staff member on call 24/7/365 and Area Coordinators provide office hours in their respective areas during the day and many evening hours.
