Assistant Principal/Assistant Building Administrator Certification

Educators seeking the Assistant Principal/Assistant Building Administrator certification must hold a bachelor's degree, and must provide evidence of a minimum of three years' teaching experience. In addition to the "teaching exceptional children in the regular classroom" requirement for any teaching certificate in the State of Maine, those seeking the Assistant Building Administrator certificate must complete three additional courses designed to meet certification requirements for Certificate 045: Assistant Building Administrator:

ED571 Organizational Behavior and Change
The focus of this course is on how to improve learning in schools through an understanding of the relationship between schools in order to improve learning. It addresses four key dimensions: school culture, theories of change, leadership capabilities, and professional learning. The course is designed to engage participants in critical thinking and dialogue that will promote shared learning and change.

ED573 Supervision and Evaluation of Personnel
This course provides an overview of supervisory practice in public schools and includes a review of Maine State Law regarding hiring and dismissal practices, just cause, contract issues, dismissal, non-renewal, progressive discipline, and compliance investigation.

ED572 School Law for Administrators
This course provides a working knowledge of Maine and Federal school law as it applies to major issues that have affected and continue to impact public education. Discrimination, first amendment rights, due process, and academic freedom will be addressed. Through class activities, conversations, weekly assignments and research of relevant case law, students will explore the theoretical underpinnings of social reform and public policy.

Educators interested in gaining their Assistant Principal/Assistant Building Administrator Certification may take the courses in conjunction with the M.S.Ed. degree program, or as a standalone series of courses.
