English Language Proficiency
If English is not your first language, or if English is not the primary language spoken in your home, all applicants are required to provide evidence of English proficiency. For admission into an undergraduate degree program, this can be done by completing an approved English language exam: the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following are the minimum recommended scores for admissions into any degree program:
Computer-based TOEFL exam: 198
Paper-based TOEFL exam: 530
Internet-based TOEFL exam: 72 (61-71 conditional, see below)
IELTS exam: 5.5 (5.0-5.5 conditional, see below)
Students should indicate on the registration form that they wish to have results sent to Thomas College if planning to apply. Otherwise students should request a reporting of already received test results to Thomas College directly from TOEFL or IELTS. The TOEFL code for Thomas College is 3903.
Conditional Acceptance
Thomas is able to offer conditional acceptance to students with an IELTS score of 5.0 and TOEFL 61-71. The acceptance is conditional on the students' enrollment in a non-credit ESL course in the Fall term. Students will enroll in this course in addition to the standard undergraduate or graduate schedule.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Support
Thomas is dedicated to student success, and provides international students intensive support for their language needs both inside and outside the classroom. English as a Second Language is offered each fall, and includes instruction both in conversational English as well as targeted instruction in written academic and business communication
