Career Services Workshop Descriptions
Career Assessment using FOCUS 2
This workshop will teach students how to use the FOCUS 2 system and allow time for one or two self-assessments, and career research. One-on-one follow up meetings will be available to those students who want to do more career planning or goal setting in an individual session.
Preparing a Resume that will Land the Interview
Before you write your resume, be sure to attend this session. We will discuss the purpose of a resume and how to structure your format and content consistent with the purpose. Your resume is not your life story, and it is not a compilation of your previous job descriptions. Rather, it is a marketing document that provides a brief, compelling snapshot of who you are as a professional in your field. We will introduce participants to the Optimal Resume tool.
Writing an Effective Cover Letter
A cover letter is most effective when targeted to an individual job description and requirements. Knowing how to find and use key words in the job posting to describe yourslef in a cover letter will enhance your chances of getting a call for an interview.
Interview Skills/Mock interviews
What are some common questions? How to prepare? What about phone interviews? How do I make it through a four-person panel interview without stressing to death? We will discuss how to get ready for questions the employer will ask you, but also we will cover what questions you should ask the employer. As a follow-up exercise, we offer practice interview sessions.
Finalizing your job search marketing materials
How to: write a sharp cover letter, showcase your job and internship accomplishments in a compelling way on your resume, make your ePortfolio "pop," and create a professional presence online. We will discuss how your upcoming job search is really about sales and marketing, and we will introduce some marketing and branding language that relates to how you position yourself in the search for a career-track position.
Launching and managing an effective job search
There is more to a job search than sending out resumes and letters. In fact, if you confine your job search solely to that activity, you are going to be very lonely. The search for a full-time job is a full-time job in itself. Learn what steps you need to take to find a GREAT JOB! We will discuss the concept of the "hidden job market" and provide tips on how to unearth those hard-to-find opportunities.
