Directions from Europe
Many foreign airlines arrive in New York which means a change of planes to fly to Boston, MA (Boston International Airport (BOS)) or Portland, ME (Portland International Jetport (PWM)). Make sure to get the direct (nonstop) flights to Portland International Jetport (PWM). Also note that New York has 2 airports and New Jersey has one. All international flights land at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) but many domestic flights leave from LaGuardia Airport (LGA) or Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey (EWR), which are miles away by bus or taxi.
If JFK is your Port of Entry you must go through customs and immigration at JFK which means taking your bags off the plane, going through Customs inspection and then getting the bags, and yourself back on another plane, at a different gate. It is not difficult but can cause a missed connection in bad weather.
Better to arrive in Logan Airport (BOS) Boston. Lufthansa, Air France, Swiss Air, Air Canada, Iberia and Iceland Air all arrive in Boston as their Port of Entry so no plane change in the US.
