 Masters of Science in Education Leadership Curriculum

The Master of Science in Educational Leadership degree program allows you to focus your coursework in one of four areas (pathways). The pathways map courses required for state certifications.  While these pathways are aligned with State of Maine certification requirements, they do not serve as a final certification completion mechanism. Students should note that in addition to course work, teaching experience is required for final State certification.

1.    MS Educational Leadership – General (30 credits)

2.    MS Educational Leadership – Assistant Principal (30 credits)

3.    MS Educational Leadership – Principal (36 credits)

4.    MS Educational Leadership – Assistant Superintendent/ Superintendent (36 credits)

General Master of Science in Education Leadership

 The General Master of Science in Education Leadership is a 30 credit Graduate curriculum for students from a variety of backgrounds, including teachers, consultants, policy leaders, higher education professionals etc. This degree program does not require prior teaching experience, though classroom experience is recommended. Students take courses including:

  • Educational Leadership
  • Seminar in American Schools
  • Students and Families at Risk
  • Educational Assessment
  • Trends in Curriculum Development
  • Trends in Instruction
  • Capstone in Education
  • Educational Leadership electives (9 credits)

Assistant Principal/Assistant Building Administrator Pathway

Educators seeking the Master of Science in Education Leadership - Assistant Principal/Assistant Building Administrator pathway must hold a bachelor's degree, and must provide evidence of a minimum of three years' teaching experience (can be earned concurrently with coursework). Students must also have completed prerequisite undergraduate-level coursework in "teaching exceptional children in the regular classroom." The M.S.Ed.L. - Assistant Principal/ assistant Building Administrator is a 30 credit curriculum including the following courses:

  • Educational Leadership
  • Seminar in American Schools
  • Students and Families at Risk
  • Educational Assessment - 3 credits
  • Trends in Curriculum Development
  •  Trends in Instruction
  • Capstone in Education
  • Organizational Behavior and Change
  • Supervision and Evaluation of Personnel
  • School Law for Administrators

Principal/ Building Administrator Pathway

Educators seeking the Master of Science in Education Leadership -  Principal/Building Administrator pathway must hold a bachelor's degree, and  must provide evidence of a minimum of three years' teaching experience and one year administrative experience (can be earned concurrently with coursework). Students must also have completed prerequisite undergraduate-level coursework in "teaching exceptional children in the regular classroom." The M.S.Ed.L. - Principal/Building Administrator is a 36 credit curriculum including the following courses:

Assistant Superintendent/ Superintendent Pathway

Educators seeking the Master of Science in Education Leadership -  Superintendent pathway must hold a bachelor's degree,  must provide evidence of a minimum of three years' teaching experience, and must have at least one year administrative experience for assistant superintendents, and three years administrative experience for superintendents (can be earned concurrently with coursework). Students must also have completed prerequisite undergraduate-level coursework in "teaching exceptional children in the regular classroom." The M.S.Ed.L. - Assistant Superintendent/ Superintendent is a 36 credit curriculum including the following courses:
