| Here are a Few of the programs/features that Windows XP Professional has that are not available for XP Home. |
- Microsoft Configuration Manager -
Requires XP Professional to install/use. Thomas College uses this software to update
standard applications as security updates for software applications become available.
Without this software, you will need to install every security patch as they come out, manually.
Also, if your machine is lost or stolen, IT Services will be able to provide unique information regarding your hardware
to authorities to aid in the recovery of your device.
- Visual Studio .NET -
Requires XP Professional to use all of the features of Visual Studio. Visual
Studio can be installed on XP Home, but will not be fully functional - creation of
ASP. NET Web applications or ASP. NET XML Web services are not supported
- IIS - Internet Information Services, a feature in Windows
XP pro to allow your computer to become a Web Server. This feature is not accessible
under Windows XP Home, can only be used under XP Pro. Note: Running IIS
is not against the schools
AUP, if set up correctly. You must set it up so only you can have access to it.
- Improved Networking - To access internet pages
with the Thomas College Firewall client under XP Home you need to enter your
password every time you go to the internet, XP Pro can remember your network username
and password so you no longer have to enter it each time.
- Automated System Recovery - ASR will help to recover a system from a error that would
render the computer un-useable. This will allow you to boot Windows XP from a
previous system state that works. This can help you save data if your hard drive
starts to fail. This feature does not come standard with Windows XP Home.
- Encrypting File System - Windows XP Pro allows for encrypting of individual files
and folders for local security. Allows sensitive documents to remain safe from
other users. This is not supported in Windows XP Home.
- Remote Connection - Remote Desktop Connection allows you to be able to connect
to remotely to another computer (e.g. Terrier8). Remote Desktop connection would
allow you to connect to, and use your computer like it was right in front of you.
XP Home does not allow you to connect to it remotely, but it can act to connect to
another computer. Remote Desktop Connection also allows for Remote
Assistance, which allows which allows a help desk or system administrator to remotely
connect to your computer for troubleshooting purposes.
- Multi-Processor Support - While Windows XP Pro supports up to 2 processors,
Windows XP Home supports only one processor. Not important to everyone, but some may find
it necessary
