General
Q. When is the library open?
A. Hours:
  • Monday - Thursday 7:45 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • Friday 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Sunday 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Holiday, vacation, and summer hours will vary from those listed above. Irregular hours will be posted on the library door.
Q. Do I have to have my Thomas College ID to check out books or other materials?
A. Yes.
Q. How long can I check out a book?
A. Books borrowed from the library are due on the last day of the semester or trimester in which they were checked out, unless recalled earlier. See Policy
Q. How long can I check out a DVD or video?
A. 1 day – if checked out on Friday however, the item is due Monday. Overdue fines are $1 per day for DVDs or videos.

Recalls - Materials borrowed from the library are subject to recall before the end-of-semester due date. From the date when the recall notice is sent, patrons have 10 days to return the material to the library without penalty.

Fines & Fees
~Patrons who fail to return borrowed books by the end-of- semester due date will be billed for the cost of replacing the books, plus a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. The minimum fee for lost or damaged material or for material not returned by the end-of-semester or recall due date is $30 per item plus a non-refundable $10 processing fee.

~Patrons who fail to return borrowed books by the recall due date will be fined $1.00 per day, up to a maximum of $10.00. If the recalled books are not returned by the time the maximum fee is reached, the patron will also be billed for the cost of replacing the books, plus a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee.

~Fines for overdue reserve materials range from $0.50 to $5 per day, depending upon the importance and/or extent of the material.

~Fines for overdue videos are $1.00 per day per video, up to a maximum of $10.00.

Q. Is there a photocopier for student use in the library?
A. Yes. Copies are 10 cents per page –Dimes only please.
Q. Where are the books?
A. Books that circulate at located on the second floor of the library.
Q. Where are the reserve items?
A. Books, magazines, photocopies, and other materials on reserve are assigned by instructors as required or suggested reading. They are kept behind the circulation desk in the library. All reserve material must be used in the library and may not be taken out at any time. In this way, all students in a particular course have access to the material. The person signing for the material is held responsible for it until it is returned.
Q. Can I use my Thomas College ID to check books out from other local libraries?
A. Yes you may. Local Libraries that will accept your Thomas College ID including, Colby College, Maine Criminal Justice Academy, Waterville Public Library, and Kennebec Valley Community College subject to that library's lending policies. Any Maine resident may borrow books from the Maine State Library located in Augusta.

Q. What is information literacy?
A. Definition: Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information.

It has become increasingly clear that students cannot learn everything they need to know in their field of study in a few years of college. Information literacy equips them with the critical skills necessary to become independent lifelong learners. (from ACRL -Association of College & Research Libraries)

Q. How do I reserve portable A/V equipment?
A. We encourage you to make your reservation request as early as possible to avoid conflicting with another user. Contact the Help Desk , x204, or  the Information Resources (Colleen Burnham), x256.

MARVEL Help
Q. I can't connect to the MARVEL databases from off-campus?
A. Make sure you are logged into the Thomas Network. If you do not log into the Thomas Network you will need to register with MARVEL.
Q. How can I look up a specific journal title in the Marvel databases?
A. To check the availability of a title in the MARVEL! databases please use the Maine State Library's E-Journal Portal. This site searches titles only but will provide a link to the MARVEL! databases that contain this title. Please Contact a librarian for any additional assistance.

Newspapers
Q. What newspapers are in the library?
A. Daily: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Morning Sentinel, and Bangor Daily News
Sunday:
The New York Times and Maine Sunday Telegram

In addition Thomas College participates in the "USA Today Readership Program" which is run through the Student Life office and funded by Student Senate. The papers are offered every weekday when classes are in session and include the
USA Today, New York Times and Morning Sentinel. The free papers are available for students in the Commuter Lounge (1st floor of Administration Building), GPH Residence Hall Lobby (1st floor), and the Bartlett Hall Lobby (1st floor).
Q. Which of the MARVEL databases include newspapers?
A. ProQuest Newspapers is a great place to start searching for digital editions of newspapers as it does contain some full text.
Q. Are the local Maine newspapers online?
A. Yes, and good place to find Maine newspapers is Maine Newsstand,  part of MARVEL: Maine's virtual libraryMaine Newsstand includes coverage of the Bangor Daily News (12/3/92-present), the Kennebec Journal (Augusta) (6/11/93-present), the Portland Press Herald (10/30/95-present), and the Central Maine Morning Sentinel (Waterville) (8/12/93-present). Selected business coverage of the Maine Times (2/4/94-4/25/02) is also included.  The Bangor Daily News is also available via Lexis-Nexis and selected recent news from the Morning Sentinel is available on the newspaper's web site at http://morningsentinel.mainetoday.com/ .
