Thomas Features Keith Curtis as Artist of the Month

WATERVILLE, Jan. 28 - Thomas College is featuring the original paintings of Keith Curtis in its art gallery during the month of February.

The exhibit on display features local downtown scenes, landscapes, portraits, and still life. While Curtis's main concentration now is pastels, he also works with oils.

Curtis grew up in Waterville. His interest in art began at a young age, continued into high school under the direction of Muriel Robinson-Ragsdale at Waterville High School and afterwards with William Sutherland at Sutherland Advertising. Curtis also studied art with nationally-known artist Albert Handell in New York.

In addition to a previous exhibit at Thomas, Curtis has had exhibits displayed in many galleries including Thayer Hospital, Kennebec Federal Savings Bank, Framemakers and the Chamber of Commerce Conference Room. He has paintings featured in collections in Maine, New York, California, Arizona, and Texas. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including "Best in Show" in shows in Waterville and Bangor. Curtis has been a member of the Waterville Area Art Society since 1989 and has served as the group's treasurer since 1991.

Curtis served in the U.S. Navy for four years and worked at IBM in New York for 31 years. He is now retired and lives in Waterville with his wife, Jeannette.

Curtis' work is on display in the College's art gallery in its administration building at 180 West River Road in Waterville. The gallery is open to the public Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
