WATERVILLE, April 29--On April 1, Thomas College added the
latest high-speed wireless network access (802.11n) to their
campus library. The new technology will strengthen the school's
ability to provide reliable wireless performance and mobile
services to students, faculty and staff.
The new innovative wireless infrastructure is five times faster
than the most commonly used networks today, 802.11a/g. "802.11n
is an entirely new technology," said Chris Rhoda, vice president
for Information Services at Thomas. "These major updates only
happen about once per decade."
The new 802.11n network represents the College's latest
milestone in adopting leading-edge information technology. For
the first time, wireless speeds may be greater than wired
speeds, in some areas, which means the new addition will benefit
the students' mobility. The 802.11n network offers improved
reliability and faster throughput for existing 802.11g
implementations, allowing students to still use their old
technology. Thomas is the first college in Maine to cover their
entire library with this new wireless network.
