Thomas Students Contribute to the Out
of the Darkness Walk

WATERVILLE,
October 20 -- On October 18, Thomas students accompanied by Professors Dale
Dickson and Jim Chapman and coordinator/alumna Teresa Rael,
participated in the first Out of the Darkness Walk. The
group met at a designated meeting spot before starting
their two hour walk. Thomas College students from
Professor Jim Chapman's computer science classes along
with students from Thomas' Psychology Club participated
in this first walk in Waterville. The walk attracted
approximately 60 walkers, Thomas students accounting
for 20 percent of that number. The
event sponsor, American Foundation for Suicide
Prevention, provides opportunities for survivors of
suicide loss to get involved with suicide prevention
awareness through a wide variety of education, outreach,
advocacy and fundraising programs. "Suicide
and mental illness take an enormous toll on families,
friends and neighbors, leaving communities across the
country devastated by this national health problem,"
AFSP Executive Director Robert Gebbia said.
Their funds research is aimed at improving the public's understanding of
suicide and ways to prevent it, as well as educational
activities to increase awareness about prevention,
warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses that can
lead to suicide.
