Thomas College
and Putnam Investments have announced a Putnam work-study program housed
at Thomas College. The College
also serves as a training center for Putnam’s expanding work-at-home
program in Maine. Putnam, a Boston-based investment management company that
manages $400 billion in assets and employs more than 6,000 people
worldwide, trains and employs Thomas College students in an on-campus
customer-service facility.
This newly renovated state-of-the-art facility was completed in November of
2000 and will be ready for the first class of student employees in

This partnership
signifies Putnam’s continued confidence in Maine as a focal point for
its student employment and work-at-home programs.
Gretchen Brown, Assistant Vice President
for Global Operations Services
“The Putnam opportunity is ideal for our students,” Thomas College
President George Spann said. “Without leaving campus, they can gain
valuable work experience and learn about the rapidly growing mutual fund
industry. The students will be able to work around their class schedule.
This work-study program could also lead to more permanent professional
careers with Putnam once they graduate.”
Putnam uses the Thomas College facility to expand its work-at-home program
in Maine. Since June, Putnam has been interviewing, training and hiring
Maine residents for its work-at-home program.Putnam’s initial goal is to hire 200 people to work from their
homes in jobs ranging from customer service to management.
Dan DiGirolamo, Assistant Vice President for Transfer
Agent Services
“We are extremely pleased with the overwhelming response we’ve
received to our work-at-home program,” said Putnam’s Daly. “We
received over 1,400 resumes from every corner of the state."

While the
quantity of responses has far exceeded our expectations, the quality of
the applicants has been even more exceptional.”
Steve Levesque, Maine’s Commissioner of Economic
and Community Development, was also on hand during the October
announcement, showing the support of Maine’s Governor Angus King.
“This virtual, long-distance employment program creates opportunities
for Maine people no matter where they live,” said Levesque. “It also
emphasizes the importance of Maine’s advanced telecommunications network
and its impact on economic development in rural Maine.”
