Event Rules
Event Format: The
format of this event will be determined once teams have signed up.
Teams:
Each team should designate a captain. Captain's must
meet with the Director in a captain's meeting prior to the start of
the season. The captain is the
team’s representative on the floor. While anyone on the floor may
request a time-out, only the captains may address the
officials on matters of interpretation.
Eligible
Players:
Players must have a liability form signed and on file with the Front
Desk before being allowed to play. All players must show
their ID at the front desk and be a current student, faculty, or
staff member.
Forfeits: Game time is forfeit
time. There will be no grace period. Games will start
within 3 minutes of the scheduled time, or the game will be a
forfeited and the offending team will be recorded for a loss.
The Court: All matches are in the
Athletic Center. Be mindful of the textured floor.
Diving dig shots are discouraged.
Ceiling/Rafters: If the ball
touches any part of the ceiling it will be ruled “out”.
Adjacent Courts: Teams may
not play the ball from an adjacent court. If the ball passes
into an adjacent court, it will be ruled “out”.
Obstructions: The referee may
declare a replay of a rally if at any point during that rally; an
outside obstruction enters the playing area, or an adjacent area
where said obstruction may be dangerous to any or all of the
players.
Rescheduling: As a rule, games
will not be rescheduled. Team members should call their
captains for scheduling information
Sportsmanship: Players are
expected to display good sportsmanship toward fellow competitors,
officials, and other staff. Any display of poor sportsmanship
will be met with disciplinary actions which will likely include the
removal of an offending player from the game and/or the tournament
as a whole.
Players ejected from a game must meet with the Director of
Recreation and Intramural Programs before being allowed to play in
another game.

The Game

Players: A team consists of
8 players. Each team should consist of no fewer than 2 women
per team. If a female team signs up, they must carry no fewer
than 2 men. A team may play a maximum of 6 players on the court.
Teams must alternate genders in the rotation
for a minimum of 8 games on the season. For example, the
women on the rosters must play in at least 8 games in the season.
Staff will be taking attendance at each game.
Substitutions: Teams may
substitute freely at the server position only. Exception:
injuries
Match Length/Scoring: Best 2 of 3
games will advance. Rally scoring will be used. A point
is awarded on each rally regardless on which team is serving.
Games will be 21 points in a best 2 of 3 format. The last game
is only to 15 points. You must win a game by 2 points.
Timeouts: One timeout per team
per match. Timeout will be 1 minute in length.
Starting Play: A coin toss
determines first serve/side of court. Winner has option.
Each option is alternated in each succeeding game. Teams
change courts at end of each game.
Officials: Game official’s calls
are final. One game official will also act as official
scorekeeper.
Serves: May be overhand or
under-hand. Server must start with both feet behind the end
line. If a server does not like his/her toss, they may let the
ball fall to the floor, and take one re-toss per service rotation.
Scoring: Games will be
scored using Rally Point scoring where a point is scored following
any error during a rally. In other words, a team does not need
to be serving to score a point.
Ceiling/Rafters: If the ball
touches any part of the ceiling it will be ruled “out”.
Adjacent Courts: Teams may
not play the ball from an adjacent court. If the ball passes
into an adjacent court, it will be ruled “out”.
Center Line: A player’s foot may
touch the centerline as long as the entire foot does not cross-over
into the other court
Above the net: Players may
reach over the net only in an attempt to block. Touching the
net during such a process is prohibited. A block does not
constitute a hit.
