About Thomas Admissions Academics Student Life Athletics Support Thomas

"The friendships I've made at Thomas have been nothing short of amazing; in such an intimate, tight-knit community, you get to know other students quite well. These are the relationships that will last long after I graduate, some for a lifetime. I’m also really excited to think about ten years down the road and see what we’ve become, reflecting back on how our Thomas experience helped to shape and guide us."

Grandmother's Advice

Grandmother's advice can help with stress, insomnia, and many other things that ail you.  Plus, it can help prevent chronic health problems and keep you feeling and functioning at your best.

* Get 30 to 45 minutes of sustained exercise like swimming, biking, walking, or jogging 4 to 5 times a week.  See what the Department of Recreation and Intramural Programs offers in the Athletic Center's Fitness Center.

* Eat at least 3 times a day.  Choose a wide variety of healthy foods including fresh fruits, leafy green vegetables, and whole grains.  Eat foods rich in protein and complex carbohydrates and how in saturated fat.

* Eat breakfast every day, even if it's just a healthy snack on the way to class or work.

* Drink 2 quarts of water every day.  Drink more if exercising or sweating heavily.

* Minimize caffeine, chocolate, and sugar intake.  To reduce caffeine "withdrawal" symptoms, reduce your intake incrementally over a week or so.

* Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol intake, or stimulant or sedative drugs.

* Plan for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.

And remember you Mom or Gram saying...

....put your coat on...

....where's your hat...

....don't get your feet wet...

Going without these items does not cause a cold, but if your body is stressed by the blustery weather it makes you more vulnerable to a cold virus

....wash your hands...

....don't pick your nose...

....stop rubbing your eyes...

The most common way for cold viruses to spread is hand to hand, then hand to face contact.  So, wash your hands frequently and keep them away from your face.

....you're not getting enough sleep...

....you need to be in bed...

Your body needs at least 8 hours of sleep to help keep your immune system in good shape to help you fight off viruses.

....clean your plate...

.... drink your juice...

Your body needs vitamins and minerals to help your immune system stay strong to fight the effects of viruses.
