Dirigo Nomination’s are all in! Winners will be announced mid-December.
What is The Dirigo Award?
The Dirigo Award, named after Maine’s Motto meaning “I lead,” was initiated in 2014 to recognize academic and co-curricular leadership among Maine high school students. Since then, the award has been expanded to include a high school student in each New England state (ME, CT, RI, VT, MA & NH). These students have demonstrated leadership, community service, and academic commitment, as well as a sincere desire to attend Thomas College. This scholarship is worth $2500 per year for up to four years.
Who is eligible to nominate a recipient for The Dirigo Award?
One Dirigo Scholarship will be awarded to one student from each high school in New England. Students’ GPA must fall between 2.8 and 3.69 on a 4.0 scale. The Guidance Office should submit their nomination to firstname.lastname@example.org. If there is more than one applicant from a high school, the Admissions Office will call Guidance to have them rank a student by: character, student involvement, GPA, and financial aid.
What are the nomination guidelines?
The nomination deadline is November 16, 2019. Nominations should be submitted by emailing the student’s name(s) to email@example.com. Because we already have the supporting documents from the student’s application, we just need their name for the nomination.
When must a Dirigo Award nominee apply for admission?
In order to be considered for the scholarship, nominated students must apply to Thomas College by completing the Common Application online, Thomas Online Application, or Thomas Paper Application. The application fee is waived for all nominees. All supporting information (transcript, letters of recommendation, etc.) must be submitted as well.
If a student is nominated, applies, and is accepted to Thomas College, is the student committed to attend?
Students who are admitted and named a Dirigo Award recipient will have until May 1, 2019, to make their enrollment decision. We certainly hope that most will choose to enroll at Thomas College, but understand that students may have other options to consider.
When will domestic students receive their financial aid packages?
Students interested in being considered for financial aid in addition to the merit-based scholarship must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) with the US Department of Education’s processing center after October 1.
