Katherine Ferreira ’17 is used to performing in front of an audience. As a dancer for Thomas College’s Dance Club and in high school, she has performed on a stage countless times.

But in November, it will be the first pageant for Ferreira.

As a state finalist in the Miss Maine USA pageant, Ferreira will compete against other women from around the state in an on-stage panel interview, swimsuit and evening gown competition on November 26 and 27 at the Sheraton Hotel in Portland, Maine.

If selected as Miss Maine USA 2017, she will represent the state and compete for the title of National Miss USA 2017.

“It’s always something I’ve wanted to do. And I just felt like this is my year to go out for it,” said the 21-year-old.

Ferreira, from Arundel, Maine, is a senior at Thomas College; she hopes to one day be a guidance counselor in an elementary or middle school.

“I’ve loved my four years at Thomas College. It’s small enough that all of the teachers know you by name and you know the teachers and your classmates,” she said. “It was just such a good fit for me.”

Ferreira, a psychology major and education minor, plans to intern next semester in the guidance office of an elementary or middle school so she can get a feel for her future career.

She has been involved with the Dance Team, Student Senate, Psychology Club and works part-time in Waterville and at Thomas College’s gym, the Harold Alfond Athletic Center.

Ferreira says the Thomas College community has been more than supportive of her new venture.

“I’m going after something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m in an environment right now at Thomas College that is more than supportive of that. I haven’t faced any judgment or any stereotypes as far as being a college student going after a crown,” she said. “So as far as training here and working out more and training and being accepted on campus – nothing has changed at all in terms of support from the Thomas community.”

Note: Ferreira is raising funds for her competition. The sponsorships she receives are necessary to help cover the costs of the pageant weekend which includes: entrance fees, production costs, clothing, hotel expenses, etc. She is striving to raise $2,500 and any donation will help and all will be appreciated. If you would like to donate, you can contact her at 207-710-1958, 78 Limerick Rd, Arundel, ME 04046, or [email protected] .
