What to Expect
The new Thomas College Sports Center is slated to open in August 2022.
The much-needed, new facility, designed by SMRT Architects and to be built by Sheridan Construction Corporation and E.L. Vining & Son, Inc., will encompass 18,000 square feet for the College’s athletic and Esports programs. Inside, students, staff, and guests will find training space, coaches’ offices, locker rooms, an Esports facility, and more.
The project is possible thanks to the hundreds of volunteers and donors who dedicated their time, talent, and philanthropy to the Guarantee the Future Campaign, which generated more than $30 million. The comprehensive effort raised funds for endowed and expendable scholarships, academic and student success programs, strategic partnerships, professional and career development, and the Thomas Fund.
Community Reaction to the New Sports Center
On Thursday, June 17, community members, including new and prospective students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, and friends, celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Sports Center.
The strategically planned addition to the Kennebec Savings Turf Field Complex, which will overlook the Bernatchez and Smith Fields, represents more than an expansion to the College’s physical space, remarked speakers [including] President Laurie Lachance M.B.A. ’92, Athletic Director Chris Parsons ’98, Jordan Gibson ’17, and student-athlete Aubrey Schaeffer ’22. Schaeffer, a soccer player from Union, ME, encouraged incoming students in the crowd to be active in athletics as either competitors or fans. “This is one of the best ways to show your Thomas pride and get involved in what the campus community has to offer,” Schaeffer said. “Yes, I do find myself a little jealous that I will only be seeing the new locker rooms and visiting the training room for just one season, but for every step we take as a Thomas community, we help take the next classes of students to an amazing place that is full of wonderful new experiences.”
