1.Welcome to the Board of Trustees! Why did you agree to serve in this capacity at Thomas?
President Lachance is so engaging, inspiring, and motivating. It would be hard for anyone to say “no” to her when she asks for your involvement! To serve in any capacity that Laurie is involved with was something I could not pass up. It’s also important as a graduate to give back to my school and community. I was flattered and grateful to be asked, and I am excited to develop new relationships with other trustees.
2. You and Matt own and operate Higgins & Bolduc Agency. How did you get to this point in your career?
The insurance industry has long been one of traditions, which is why we are in it. It started as a job but has now turned into a professional career for us. Most small, independent insurance agencies are family owned and passed down from one generation to the next. Through our degrees from Thomas and continued professional development and education, we have increased our business by more than 50% during the past 15 years.
3. What do you enjoy most about your work?
Although most find insurance to be a bit dry, it has always held my interest. I specialize in commercial insurance for businesses, so work is always different – each business is unique and so is its insurance needs. I like being able to educate business owners about effective coverage that also keeps costs in check. It’s exciting to meet new people, develop client relationships, and share insights. During the past year, I served as the Maine Insurance Agents’ Association Chair of the Board of Directors. In this role, I travelled the country for meetings and conversations that addressed the bigger picture in the industry. I have met amazing insurance professionals and had the honor of speaking for a large vendor at its sales kickoff meeting this winter in Denver.
4. What lessons have you learned along the way?
Perspective, patience, and empathy are at the forefront of any lasting relationship, whether that’s with clients or your staff. You can’t make assumptions, even after 20 years in the industry. You think you have seen it all, heard it all, and done it all – but, there is always more to learn!
5. What would you share with prospective Thomas students to encourage them to attend?
Your education is the single most important resource you have can have throughout life. A Thomas College education provides functional achievements and real-life experiences that will accelerate you into your career. Thomas emphasizes a hands-on, well-developed method of producing excellent graduates who are ready for the workforce and soon ready to own businesses. It offers one of the most realistic approaches to going to college with the most effective and efficient financial outcome.
