Laban Moian Nyang’au ’25 has a passion for helping people. It’s why he decided to study Psychology at Thomas College.
At Thomas, he helped fellow international students acclimate to life here. And after he graduates, Laban will continue to help others through his new job as a Case Worker with the Maine Office of Child and Family Services.
At Thomas College, Laban Moian Nyang’au was very involved and thrived academically. He’s graduating with a 3.9 GPA, published a poetry book while here, was the Fall 2023 DEI Intern, and was involved with the International Club, Black Student Union, Student Affairs Committee Member, and the Advisory Committee Member of Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) Grant.
“The small population favors learning as you get to interact and know the professors, making learning easier and also keeping a close-knit friendship with people,” he said about getting his education from Thomas.
Laban is proud that he settled in at Thomas College as a non-traditional student arriving in winter from a tropical country and was still able to perform academically at very high levels. He also is proud he was able to help other international students from Africa settle at Thomas by working with other departments to advocate and support them.
Laban’s advice to students just about to begin their college is: “College is not all about studying in class. Engage with fellow students outside classrooms, take a break once in a while, and challenge yourself with something new often as it broadens your mindset and makes learning easier.”
Congrats, Laban!
