MS120 Place Out

MS120 Place Out Assessment

The place-out assessment option is available to students required to take MS120 Foundations of Quantitative Analysis who feel they have the math skills to place out of the course. The assessment consists of problems focused on pre-algebra skills.

Students placing out of MS120 have the opportunity to select a liberal art elective to take in lieu of MS120. Credit is not awarded for MS120 based on this assessment.

A student with Math SAT scores of at least 500 or with prior college-level math credit should submit a copy of their SAT score or a copy of their transcript to the Registrar’s office in lieu of taking the place-out assessment.

Taking the place-out assessment is voluntary. Students who know they need to work on their pre-algebra skills before tackling more challenging complex math coursework simply take MS120 and develop their skills by working with one of Thomas College’s math instructors.

Assessment date: Thursday, September 10, 2026
Time: 6:00 pm
Location: AL-136

Please contact Debbie Cunningham at [email protected] by Tuesday, September 8, 2026 to reserve your spot. We will also accept walk-ins.

Preparing for the Place-Out Assessment

The best way to prepare for the assessment is to familiarize yourself with the types of problems that will be on the assessment. You are strongly encouraged to review the sample problems before attempting the assessment.

Once you have reviewed the sample problems, you can refresh any unfamiliar problem types through Khan Academy:

How the Assessment is Scored

A grade of 80% or higher on the assessment will allow you to place out of taking MS120.

What Does the Place-Out Option Cost?

Students do not pay to take the assessment, but since the College does incur costs for the administration, students will be permitted one attempt at the assessment.

What Should I Bring with me?

You should bring something to write with and a calculator not attached to a phone or other device. Scratch paper will be provided by the proctor.

What if I qualify for accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act?

Any student in need of supportive services (academic or other) related to taking this assessment should see our Student Accommodations & Disability Services page, in advance, to review their needs and related accommodations.
