Remembering Rebecca: Kane Family Honors Late Employee with Scholarship Fund Web Director | October 30, 2018

As a way to honor and remember beloved staff member Rebecca Kane, who passed away in March 2017 after a long battle with breast cancer, her husband Kenny and son Kaleb are creating a legacy of caring in her name to support Thomas students.

Rebecca Kane worked at the Welcome Center at Thomas from 2010 to 2017. As one of the first faces students, families, staff, and visitors encountered on campus, she was famous for brightening each person’s day with her smile, humor, hugs, and genuine interest in and concern for everyone. She also served as an advisor to Club CRU, the student-led Christian group on campus.

“Thomas did so much to help Rebecca,” reflects Kenny. “When she died, I knew I wanted to do something for the College, and especially for the students.”

A year later, Kenny began working to establish the Rebecca Kane Memorial Scholarship, a fund to benefit students in need, and particularly those involved in Club CRU. Through his own personal support and that of many family members, friends, and Thomas employees, he raised more than $4,000 during the 2018 Day of Giving. Buoyed by the results – and the excitement of a student receiving the scholarship this fall – he decided to set his sights higher, with a goal of raising $25,000 to endow the fund. At that mark, it will generate $1,000 annually in perpetuity, all in Rebecca’s memory.

This fall, Kenny and Kaleb co-signed a letter to their family and friends asking for their help. Kenny also signed up to donate to the fund monthly.
